The wind has been relentless this spring, and moisture has skipped over us. Every day the guys check the forecast praying for rain. As the days go by, they get quieter, and more anxious. Our philosophy is to graze 1/2 -leave 1/2 to catch snow over the winter and also have some carry over for next spring. But our ground is parched and it’s starting to look like the dirty thirties. Joe’s alway said these droughts sure test you. In 2002 we had to wean the calves July 6th. (We usually wean late Sept) As the trucks were pulling down the road with the calves, the cows broke through the fence, chasing the trucks down the road. We stood there and cried. 2012-2013 brought on another drought, in order to hang onto our genetics we bought more feed than you can even imagine, and also culled anything that was not top notch. 2022 challenged ranchers again. Agriculture is not for the faint of heart.
As we trail to grass this year we are grateful for the unprecedented prices, the abundance of hay we had last year, and trust that God will send us the rain we so desperately need. Please join us in thanking God for all our blessings and asking him to grace us with much needed moisture. Amen.
