I’m proud to be certified in Natural Lifemanship and a trainer. This is a great example of what sessions might look or feel like.

In a world that moves fast and often asks us to “push through,” therapy can be one of the few places where slowing down is not only allowed, it’s essential.

At NL Counseling and Wellness, we intentionally slow things down in sessions. Not because we’re trying to delay progress, but because meaningful change often happens in the quiet, subtle moments that are easy to miss when we rush.

Listening to the Body:
Our bodies are constantly sending signals about what we’re feeling and experiencing: tight shoulders, a held breath, a churning stomach, a sense of ease or tension. But many of us have spent years learning to ignore those signals.

When therapy moves too quickly, it’s easy to miss these important messages from the nervous system. Slowing down gives us a chance to notice them.

For example, a therapist might pause and ask:
• “What do you notice in your body right now?”
• “What happened with your breathing when you walked toward the horse?”
• “I noticed you biting your lip just then. What was happening for you in that moment?”

These small pauses help people reconnect with their own internal signals, which is something that is incredibly important for healing from stress, anxiety, and trauma.

Listening to the Horse:
If clients choose to partner with horses in therapy, it becomes very clear that the horse’s nervous system is just as much a part of the session as the client’s nervous system. Horses are masters at reading body language and nervous system cues. They notice things humans often miss.

Because of this, we also slow down so we can pay attention to what the horse is communicating.

A horse might show us something through:
• turning their head away
• stepping closer or stepping back
• licking and chewing
• lowering their head
• becoming still or moving their feet
When we slow down, we can become curious about those moments instead of rushing past them. Those moments can become powerful opportunities for awareness and growth.

Why We Don’t Rush:
Another reason we move slowly is because of the natural power difference that exists in therapy.

When a therapist asks someone to try something, many people feel pressure to say yes, even if their body is saying “I’m not ready.” This is especially true for people who have spent much of their lives prioritizing other people’s expectations over their own needs.

For example, a therapist might suggest, “Would you like to try rhythmic riding today?”

A client might immediately say yes, even though their stomach tightens or their heart starts racing.

In traditional settings, that moment might be missed. The person pushes through, overrides their nervous system, and completes the task. Once again the person hasn’t learned to tune in and trust their body.

In Natural Lifemanship, we try to notice those signals instead of pushing past them.

We might slow down and say, “Before we do that, let’s pause for a moment. What does your body say about that idea?”

Sometimes the answer is still yes. Sometimes the answer becomes not yet. And both are okay.

Honoring those signals helps people rebuild trust with their own bodies, something that many people have had to disconnect from in order to cope with difficult experiences.

Slowing Down Creates Safety:
Healing doesn’t happen when people feel rushed or pressured. It happens when they feel safe enough to notice what is happening inside of them… and to respond to those signals with curiosity instead of judgment.

When we slow down:
• clients can hear their own nervous system again
• horses can communicate more clearly
• small but meaningful moments of connection are easier to see
• people get to practice making choices that truly feel right for them

And often, those quiet moments (a breath, a pause, a horse lowering their head) end up being the most powerful parts of the session.

Because sometimes the most important thing we can do in therapy is simply slow down enough to truly notice what is happening.

This morning the equestrian world woke up to the news that Endo the Blind has passed away.

And if you’ve spent any time online this morning already, you’ll have seen it.
Tributes. Photos. Stories. People sharing the impact he had on them.

Some people might look at that and think, “It was just a horse on the internet.”

But grief doesn’t really work like that.

There’s a term called disenfranchised grief. It’s used to describe grief that society doesn’t always recognise as “valid” or worthy of mourning. The loss of an animal we never met. A horse that lived on the other side of the world. A creature we only knew through photos and videos.

Yet somehow… they still mattered.

Endo represented something bigger than himself.
He was a horse who moved through the world with trust, guidance, and an extraordinary partnership with the humans around him. People followed his story because it reminded them of resilience. Of kindness. Of what horses are capable of when someone believes in them.

So when a horse like that dies, the sadness spreads far beyond one yard or one family.

It ripples through a whole community.

The equestrian world can be many things. Opinionated. Chaotic. Occasionally completely unhinged. But when a horse like Endo leaves us, you see the other side of it.

Thousands of people pausing their day to honour a life.

And that matters.

Because grief is really just love with nowhere to go.

Rest easy, Endo.
You reminded a lot of people what horses are capable of.

Here's my little tribute ❤️ 🌈

Today is the 1st of March.

You can feel it… something is shifting, the light , the warmth of the day

The mornings are arriving a little earlier.
The light is staying a little longer.
And the land is beginning to wake up again

The horses feel it before we do.
They stand differently.
Move differently.
As if they already know what is coming.

March reminds us that nothing stays still forever.
Not the hard seasons.
Not the waiting.
Not the parts of ourselves still finding their way.

This is a month of gentle forward movement.
Of trusting what is unfolding.
Of remembering that you are allowed to begin again.

Today is hope, hope for warmer days, hope for peaceful days without war, hope for a a beautiful spring and summer....

Every year as I start to put together the details for this camp, I pray over every word I want to share. I pray over every girl that will be here. This world is not easy but when we teach our daughters they can walk around with Crowns and Armor, they can succeed no matter what.
Three days of learning, devotions, crafts, and connection with horses and each other.

** camp is cancelled **

It is official! Spring break camp 2026 is a go! This summer because of Mikah’s accident we weren’t able to have the complete camp. So we will be able to have the complete camp talking about women in the Bible, how to think and act like a daughter of the King, along with horse activities and arts and crafts.

Shaking your body to reduce stress isn’t just a feel-good trick — it’s rooted in how the nervous system works. Here’s how shaking helps your body release stress:

🧠 1. It discharges stored survival energy
When we feel threatened — even by everyday stress — the nervous system activates a fight-flight-freeze response. Animals literally shake after danger passes to discharge adrenaline and tension.
Humans often don’t complete that process, so stress energy stays trapped in the body. Shaking gives the body a way to complete the cycle and return to baseline.

💥 2. It interrupts muscle tension
Stress causes the body to contract — shoulders rise, jaw tightens, fists clench. Shaking:
* loosens tight muscles
* increases blood flow
* breaks the “hold” of stress patterns
When the body relaxes, the brain gets a message: we’re safe now.

🩺 3. It downshifts the nervous system
Gentle rhythmic shaking can move the body from: sympathetic activation (fight/flight)-parasympathetic state (rest/digest)
That shift means:
* slower heart rate
* deeper breathing
* calmer thoughts

💓 4. It releases chemicals that help us feel better
Movement — even small movement like shaking — stimulates:
* endorphins (natural mood lifters)
* dopamine (motivation + reward)
* oxytocin when done in groups (connection calms the nervous system)

🌀 5. It disrupts rumination and brings you back to your body
Stress thrives in the mind — looping thoughts, worries, what-ifs. Shaking draws attention into the present moment, which:
* reduces spiraling thoughts
* grounds you in your physical body
* increases embodiment and awareness

✨ In short:
Shaking helps because it allows the body to do what it was designed to do —move stress out instead of hold it in.
