Cooperative Care: Start-Button Handling
Teach your dog to “say yes” before touching paws, ears, or mouth.
Create a start button: a chin-rest on a folded towel or a nose-target to your hand. Mark & treat for the position.
Add a tiny touch: one second touch to the area (paw/ear), then remove hands before your dog moves. Mark & treat.
Build gradually: 1-sec → 2-sec → 3-sec. If your dog pulls away, that’s communication—reset to an easier level.
Pair with goodies: lick mat, squeeze cheese, or a stuffed Kong while you practice.
Keep it short: 60–90 seconds, 2–3x/day. Progress happens in tiny reps!
Trainer notes: Watch for early stress (lip licks, head turns, paw pullback). Lower criteria, pay more. Pain? Ask your vet.
