Throwback to that time I got to work on a Zebra!

I was able to work on a horse of a different color today and it was pretty neat! Flip Flip the Zebra sure enjoyed his Acuscope & Myopulse session!
It was really interesting to see how he responded differently than the horses but he was such a willing patient. I can definitely say heโ€™s my favorite zebra ๐Ÿ˜
Thank you Tammy Rowland for trusting me with your special guy, heโ€™s so much fun.

Letโ€™s talk about something that seems fairly simple but I donโ€™t see enough people break it down for someone who may not know!

Whatโ€™s the difference between them? What is their function?

๐‹๐ข๐ ๐š๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ are tough, fibrous bands of connective tissue that ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ, stabilizing joints and limiting excessive movement.
A common ligament I see injured in horses is a suspensory ligament tear or strain.

๐“๐ž๐ง๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ are a fibrous connective tissue that ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž.
A very common injury in horses (especially performance horses) that I see is a Deep Digital Tendon tear or strain.

The suspensory ligament originates at the top of the cannon bone, runs down the back of the leg, and splits into two branches that attach to the sesamoid bones at the back of the fetlock joint. Its primary function is to stabilize the fetlock, preventing it from sinking too low to the ground under the horse's weight. It also helps store and release kinetic energy, aiding in forward propulsion.

The Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (DDFT) in horses is a critical structure running down the back of the leg, originating in the forearm, passing through the carpal canal, and inserting on the coffin bone (distal phalanx). It acts as a primary flexor, supporting weight and absorbing massive force, especially during jumping or high-speed, often leading to injuries like strains or tears, particularly within the hoof capsule.

Do these examples help explain the different functions in tendons and ligaments?

These are very common injuries I see and have worked with the last few years!
These injuries need to always be diagnosed by a veterinarian!

The brachiocephalicus is a large, superficial muscle running from the base of the skull/neck to the upper forelimb.

What is the action of this muscle?
It moves the head and neck to the side. It is essential for extending the head and neck and propelling the front leg forward.

I often see this muscle get sore in barrel and rope horses. A lot of rope horses pull, so they exert this muscle!
Soreness in this muscle usually presents with a shortened stride and flinching upon palpation.
This is one of my favorite areas to work on and I have protocols explicitly for this muscle!

Message me for more information, with questions or to book a session!
I am available for travel, haul ins, and long term rehabilitation!

What are some common areas of concern I see in performance horses?
There are several but today I will start with the ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ.
The semitendinosus is a major, superficial hamstring muscle in the horse's hindquarters, located between the biceps femoris and semimembranosus.

What is the action of this muscle?
It extends the hip and hock joint; flexes the stifle and rotates legs inwards.

With rope horses and barrel horses, horses that stop and turn hard, I often see soreness in this muscle and can usually be found with a palpitation or simply watching them move.
Horses with a sore semitendinosus muscle may show a shortened stride and inability to bring the leg forward.

I have several protocols I use to work on this muscle!

I am available to travel, for haul ins and for long term rehabilitation!

โœจ Exciting Addition to My Rehab Program! โœจ

Thanks to my amazing friend Tayla Moeykens, Iโ€™m thrilled to officially add XLR8 Equine Red Light Therapy to my rehabilitation and performance program!

This is a powerful new tool that offers cumulative benefits, meaning the more consistently itโ€™s used, the greater the impact on healing, recovery, and performance optimization. It fits seamlessly into my program because Acuscope and Myopulse therapies are also cumulative in nature, working together over time to support the bodyโ€™s natural healing processes rather than providing one-time or temporary relief. Red light therapy complements this approach by enhancing circulation, cellular repair, and long-term tissue health.

Using red light and near-infrared wavelengths, the Redline bell boot is designed to target issues in the hoof and lower limb by promoting circulation and reducing inflammation. Its proven anti-inflammatory effects and vasodilation help relieve pain and support healing for conditions such as laminitis, navicular, and a variety of hoof, tendon, and ligament issues.

๐ŸŒŸ Red Light Therapy Benefits:
โ€ข Reduces inflammation in joints, muscles, and chronic pain conditions
โ€ข Soothes muscle soreness and speeds post-workout recovery
โ€ข Natural pain relief by stimulating the bodyโ€™s own endorphin release

Iโ€™m excited to start offering this as part of every horseโ€™s stay with me. If youโ€™re curious whether these therapies will benefit your horse or if you have any questions, feel free to message me ๐Ÿค

~

Thank you again Tayla for being such an amazing and supportive friend!
If youโ€™re looking into getting your own XLR8 products, message Tayla! She is super knowledgeable and uses this therapy on her horses ALL the time and always has good deals to offer!
