**Labor Day Weekend Hours**

Just a heads-up for our Family Pet Hospital family about our upcoming holiday hours!

💊 **Saturday, September 5**
We will be **OPEN for prescription and medication pick-up ONLY.** We will not be seeing appointments that day.

🇺🇸 **Monday, September 7 – Labor Day**
We will be **CLOSED**.

If your pet needs a medication refill before the long weekend, please contact us ahead of time so we can have it ready for pick-up.

We’ll return to our normal business hours on **Tuesday, September 8**.

🐾 **Happy National Dog Day!** 🐾

Today is all about celebrating the dogs who make our lives better simply by being in them. ❤️

The goofy ones. The snuggly ones. The ones who somehow take up the entire bed. The treat negotiators, professional ball chasers, expert squirrel patrol officers, and the pups who know exactly when we need a little extra love. 🐶

At **Family Pet Hospital of Shawnee**, we're lucky to spend our days caring for so many incredible dogs—and we think National Dog Day is the perfect excuse to fill our Facebook feed with them!

"Summer adventures are fun—but Kansas heat can quickly become dangerous for our four-legged friends.

Before heading out for a walk or hike, remember:
🌡️ If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws! Hot pavement can cause painful burns in just seconds.
💧 Bring plenty of fresh water and take frequent breaks.
🌳 Walk during the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible.
🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
🐶 Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.

When temperatures soar, the safest place for your pet may be indoors with the air conditioning. They'll thank you for a cool nap instead of a hot walk!

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, don't wait—seek veterinary care immediately. Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency.

"Summer is the perfect time to enjoy walks, hikes, and backyard adventures with your pets—but it's also prime season for bees, wasps, mosquitoes, ticks, spiders, and other biting insects.

Here are a few simple ways to help protect your furry family members:
🐾 Keep pets away from flowering plants, standing water, and insect nests.
🐾 Use veterinarian-recommended flea, tick, and heartworm prevention year-round.
🐾 Check your pet for ticks after spending time outdoors.
🐾 Watch for signs of a sting or bite, including swelling, redness, limping, excessive licking, or trouble breathing.

While many insect stings and bites are minor, some can cause allergic reactions or transmit serious diseases. If your pet develops significant swelling, facial swelling, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or seems unusually lethargic after an insect bite or sting, contact us right away.

🎆 **The 4th of July is almost here!** 🎆

Fireworks may be fun for us, but they can be frightening for our pets. If your dog or cat has a history of anxiety during fireworks, **don't wait until the last minute** to get their medication.

💊 If your pet needs anti-anxiety medication, please contact us **before the holiday** so we can determine the best option and have it ready for pickup.

Some additional tips to help keep your pet calm:

🐾 What an incredible weekend! 🐾

This past Saturday, Family Pet Hospital of Shawnee was proud to participate in the Dose of Love vaccine clinic, and what a tremendous success it was!

Dr. Scott, Lucas RVT, and Alex joined an amazing team of volunteers from veterinary clinics across the area, alongside the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City , to help provide essential vaccinations and preventive care to pets in our community.

Together, more than 1,000 animals were vaccinated during the event! 🎉🐶🐱

We are grateful to everyone who volunteered their time, donated resources, and helped make this event possible. Community outreach events like these help keep pets healthy, families together, and veterinary care accessible for those who need it most.

Thank you to everyone who participated and trusted us with the care of your pets. We are honored to be part of such a compassionate community! ❤️
