As the world mourns the loss of legendary country music star Dolly Parton, who died today at age 80, many are remembering her extraordinary accomplishments. But beyond the music, movies and millions of records sold, Dolly was perhaps best remembered for what a kind and generous person she was. Throughout her life, she gave her time and money to countless charitable causes, and through her Imagination Library, millions of children discovered the joy of reading. Her compassion extended to those in needโ€”and often to dogs, too.

One example happened 12 years ago, when a lost dog was discovered in a tent during cleanup at the Glastonbury music festival in the UK, where Dolly had performed for the first time. The dog was taken to Happy Landings animal shelter and named Dolly. When Parton, then 68, heard about her, she wanted to make sure the dog was all right. โ€œI had my manager call the Happy Landings animal shelter to make sure the dog is being treated and cared for properly. At this time, nobody has claimed the dog and the dog is in great hands at the shelter. I will take her home to America if nobody claims her within a reasonable amount of time.โ€

Thankfully, the publicity surrounding the story helped reunite the dog with her family. Her owners had returned to the festival site looking for her and reported her missing, but a language barrier had caused confusion. Dolly never ended up having to bring the dog home, but her concern for a lost animal she had never even met spoke volumes about her heart.

Dolly also shared a deeply personal story about her dog Popeye, whom she believed may have saved her life during one of her darkest moments in the early '80s. In her autobiography, she recalled reaching for a gun during a period of intense emotional pain from the end of a platonic emotional affair when Popeye suddenly came running up the stairs. The sound of his paws startled her back to reality, and she put the gun down.

She wrote: "I was sitting upstairs in my bedroom one afternoon when I noticed in the nightstand drawer my gun that I keep for burglars," said Dolly. "I looked at it a long time. โ€ฆ Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs. The tap-tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality I suddenly froze. I put the gun down. Then I prayed. I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God."

Dolly added, "I don't think I'd have done it โ€” killed myself โ€” but I can't say for sure. Now that I've gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities โ€” even for someone solid like me โ€” if the pain gets bad enough."

Her love and affection for dogs continued throughout her life. She later launched her own pet clothing and accessory line called Doggy Parton with a portion of the proceeds going to support Willa B. Farms, a rescue organization providing a home for displaced animals. Parton explained that her lifelong love of pets inspired the venture, saying, โ€œโ€˜Puppy Loveโ€™ was my very first record and 6 decades later, my love for pets is stronger than ever.โ€

In her later years, she affectionately called her French Bulldog Billy her โ€œgod dogโ€ and featured him in a series of children's books.

For all the lives Dolly touched through her music and generosity, perhaps her greatest legacy is the love she gave so freelyโ€”to people, to children, and to the animals who found a special place in her heart. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ
