About an hour ago I responded to a call regarding an injured raccoon reported in a driveway of someones home. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived, the animal was no longer there.💔
While returning to the clinic, the vehicle directly in front of me struck a raccoon attempting to cross the road and continued driving without stopping. The person didn't brake to avoid hitting her, they didn't swerve, they didn't as much as pause as I witnessed her roll from underneath their car😭
I immediately pulled over, activated my hazard lights, and was able to safely reach her. She was still breathing at that time but despite rapid intervention and transport, she passed away en route in my arms just 2 minutes away from our wildlife hospital. 😪
During the recovery, another passing vehicle failed to slow down and came dangerously close to the active roadside scene, even with hazard lights visible. The driver also accelerated the gas nearly hitting me and my car door. Keep in mind this is a back road , NOT a busy road and the opposing lane was completely clear for as far as an eye could see😪
We are sharing this not to assign blame, but to raise awareness.
Wildlife is active at all hours, and road crossings are unavoidable for them. Slowing down, especially at night and in residential or semi-rural areas truly makes a difference🙏🏼. If you strike an animal and it is safe to stop, please do so💔. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator or local authorities so the animal does not suffer needlessly😢.
If you see hazard lights on the roadside, please reduce speed and move over when possible. It may be a rescue in progress.
Compassion and caution save lives BOTH human and wild.🙏🏼
It brings me some peace to know that she died in my arms verses alone in the middle of a road alone and afraid .😪
What does not bring me peace is the utter disconnect for another life.
