Nice job K9 Loki!!!

On August 20th, CSPD Canine and Tactical Enforcement Officers (TEU) responded to assist CSPD Detectives with the apprehension of a suspect wanted on multiple felony-level warrants, including felony attempted vehicular assault.

The suspect’s vehicle was seen in a parking lot, and TEU Officers conducted a vehicle block. They deployed a distraction device, and the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot. K9 Loki was deployed alongside TEU Officers in attempt to apprehend the fleeing suspect. Loki skillfully navigated around uniformed officers and through environmental challenges as he pursued the suspect who ran toward the front yard of a residence.

Multiple canine commands were being given for the suspect to stop running and peacefully surrender. Just before Loki reached the suspect, he stopped and placed his hands in the air. Loki was called off without contacting the suspect and recalled to his handler. TEU Officers then took the suspect into custody without further incident. Later, CSPD Detectives recovered a firearm from the suspect’s vehicle.

The successful operation was a testament to the excellent teamwork displayed by all involved units.

On August 14, 2025,a coordinated operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force of Southern Colorado, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU), CSPD K9 Unit, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) officers resulted in the safe capture of a high-risk parole escapee wanted on felony warrants. The fugitive, identified as adult male Joshua Kirby, was wanted for Felony Escape – No Bond with full statewide extradition. USMS Detectives advised that Kirby was a known flight risk with a history of violent behavior, weapons possession, narcotics use, resisting arrest and mental health concerns. USMS personnel located Kirby as a passenger in a truck being driven by with another male, whose identity is being withheld pending investigation. Intelligence indicated this second male was associated with gang activity, white supremacist affiliations, and recent possession of numerous fi****ms. Kirby was also seen with another adult male, Shawn Agler, who was wanted on felony warrants. Working in concert, TEU officers initiated a contact block to prevent the vehicle from fleeing. Officers Waters and Church deployed a sight-and-sound diversionary device and loudly identified themselves as police. Kirby immediately fled on foot, jumping a six-foot fence to evade arrest. Agler immediately surrendered to TEU officers. K9 Officers Comstock and Kelly, positioned to contain the escape route alongside USMS detectives, observed Kirby running through the area. Officer Kelly issued K9 warnings, which Kirby ignored. With USMS vehicles pursuing under lights and sirens, Kirby ran into a heavily vegetated area. Officer Kelly deployed K9 Zev, who successfully located and apprehended Kirby in dense brush, holding him until officers could safely take him into custody. Kirby will be booked into CJC by USMS. Agler was taken to CJC by CSPD officers. Kirby was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries related to the apprehension, then turned over to USMS custody. K9 Zev, wearing a protective ballistic and stab-resistant vest provided by Vested Interest in K9s, sustained no injuries. This operation exemplifies the teamwork and professionalism of multiple agencies working together to ensure public safety during the capture of a dangerous fugitive. No officers, citizens, or additional suspects were injured during the incident.

K9 Dunkin putting in the work!!!

On Thursday August 14th day shift officers were dispatched to a residence on Garden Street for a report of an active burglary in progress. The home owner reported a male had forced entry into his home and was seen on cameras inside the residence as officers arrived. A perimeter was established at which time the Drone Unit and K9 Unit were requested. One of our department pilots cleared each floor and the male wasn’t located.

K9 Dunkin was then utilized for a building search. After clearing 3 floors he was then tasked with searching the basement where one of the windows was found to be broken. After multiple announcements were made for the suspect to give up and receiving no response K9 Dunkin entered the basement. The suspect was ultimately located and apprehended by K9 Dunkin hiding under construction debris.
