Rescue Work vs Lost Pet Recovery

This distinction is important because both fields are valuable ... but they are not interchangeable.

Many successful recoveries happen when
rescue organizations, owners, volunteers,
and recovery professionals all understand their roles and work within a coordinated strategy instead of unintentionally working against the behavioral science of a lost pet in survival mode.

Over the years my work has often been referred to as rescue. I do recovery work based on the behavioral science of lost pets with 10 plus years field experience.

We often get asked the best way to support us, and while we are not a non-profit we do run solely on donations, all too often dipping into our own pockets to pay for expenses and never taking from financial resources for ourselves. It’s not often we personally ask for help either, with that being said we find ourselves in need to keep running efficiently and effectively;

We are the first to admit we don’t love Box Traps for recovery. Every group is different, it’s just our preference to use a different style larger trap and we have operated that way for quite some time but recently we’ve come to the conclusion we NEED a box trap. Our amazing friends at Central Vermont Canine Recovery have been gracious enough to let us use theirs the last three cases but it’s time….

We also very heavily rely on our cellular game cameras to monitor traps and food stations and we’re now down to only 6 which is barely enough. We’ve been lucky in making it work but having even two more would make the world of difference for us and the missing dogs we assist to safety.

If you can find it in your heart anything helps to get us to our goal of purchasing both.

The Box Traps we have to purchase through a specific company and run around $850 with shipping, but the cameras (Reveal Tacticam Ultra $175) you can also find on our Amazon wishlist if that’s helpful. Every penny counts and we cannot thank the community enough.

While Upper Valley K9 Recovery is brand new, those of us running it are not.… Courtney Hardy needs your support for Support Upper Valley K9 Recovery's Mission

Apple in Sharon, VT is finally home, safe, warm, and exactly where she belongs. ❤️

It’s hard to put into words just how much this reunion means. What started as a terrifying moment: a loud truck, a leash snapping, and Apple vanishing in an instant, turned into hours filled with fear, hope, and determination. She was in pure flight mode, overwhelmed and scared of everything, even the people trying to help her.

But we didn’t stop. Signs went up, the community rallied, and we held onto the belief that she would find her way back and often they do. Lost dogs don’t always make it easy for us, but Apple… she stayed close. Within half a mile the entire time. Quiet, hidden, surviving, and somehow still connected to the place she barely knew.

Last night, hungry and cautious, she finally showed herself at the feeding station. And then, in the stillness of the night—when the world felt just a little less scary, she circled back to her home. She then circled, hesitated, checked every angle of our trap… and then, just after midnight, she found the courage to step in.
Less than 48 hours after she disappeared, she was safe.

And the moment she was reunited with her mom… that’s the part that makes every second of worry, every ounce of effort, completely worth it. The relief, the love, the overwhelming joy—there’s nothing like it.

Welcome home, Apple. You are so, so loved. 🐾

SCOUT IS HOME. SAFE. AFTER COVERING OVER 60 MILES.

Scout, the missing Beagle from Piermont, NH is finally back where he belongs. 🎉

For 10 days, this little hound followed his nose across towns and many miles from Piermont, Grafton, Orange, Dorchester, Lyme, Canaan… and back again. Over 60 miles of determination, instinct, and pure stubborn spirit.

Every time we got close, he slipped just ahead of us. Always moving. Always one step out of reach. Even food couldn’t convince him to stop… until, at last, it did.

There were moments when hope felt thin, when the miles felt too big and the silence too heavy but people kept showing up. Calls kept coming in. Eyes stayed open. No one gave up on him.

This reunion is more than just a happy ending, it’s a reminder of what can happen when a community refuses to let go. This was a journey that tested everyone involved, and it would not have been possible without the relentless dedication of his owners, the volunteers going out at all hours, multiple traps being set, and every single person who took the time to report a sighting….it carried Scout home, one step at a time, one paw closer to being safe. And in the final moments, when it mattered most, thank you to Fred, who gave us the chance to act when Scout was spotted, allowing a last-minute trap on his property that finally brought him to safety.

Scout is home. Safe. Strong. Exhausted. And finally resting after the adventure of a lifetime, no doubt surrounded by the people who never stopped believing he’d make it back giving all the love his beagle heart could desire. Reunion video posted, and a reminder that no matter much heartache involved in our mission. this is exactly why it matters.

Welcome home, Scout. ❤️
