Injection Sites in Common Farm Animals: A Simple Guide for Farmers and Animal Keepers

Giving injections (shots) to farm animals is a normal part of taking care of them. Injections help prevent or treat sickness and make sure the animals stay healthy. But it’s important to give these shots in the right place to avoid hurting the animal or damaging the meat, especially in animals raised for food. This guide explains the best places to give shots in common farm animals like goats, cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens.

1. Muscle Shots (Intramuscular or IM)
These shots go deep into the muscles. They work slowly but for a long time.

- Goats: The best place is in the neck, just in front of the shoulder. You can also use the back leg, but this may affect meat quality.
- Cows and Sheep: Also best in the neck to keep good meat from being damaged.
- Pigs: Given in the neck, behind the ear.
- Chickens: Usually in the breast muscle.

2. Under-the-Skin Shots (Subcutaneous or Sub Q)
These shots go just under the skin. They are easy to give and usually don’t hurt the animal much.

- Goats: Given in the armpit area or on the shoulder.
- Cows and Sheep: Given under the loose skin behind the shoulder or over the ribs.
- Pigs: Often given in the flank or behind the ear.
- Chickens: Given in the loose skin on the back of the neck.

3. Vein Shots (Intravenous or IV)
These shots go straight into a vein and work very fast. They should only be done by someone trained.

- Goats, Cows, and Sheep: Use the jugular vein in the neck.
- Pigs: The ear vein is often used.
- Chickens: Rarely done, but sometimes given in the wing vein.

4. Udder Shots (Intramammary)
These are used for female animals with udder infections, like mastitis.

- Goats, Cows, and Sheep: Medicine is put into the teat using a clean, special tool.
- Not used in pigs or chickens.

Betty gave us our last pair on Tuesday. More Benzo babes

Hallmark year with 31 lambs - in just short of a month. To be honest, when we started this in 2016, we never planned on growing even to this size. But we’re pretty proud of it.

Relatively confident the remainders of the open ewes are in fact - open. Otherwise it’ll be SUPRISE 🤣🤣

At the bare minimum .....THE FORMULA. We've tried not using it - and regretted it

So close to the finish line!!

Bluey and Monkey 😍😍 Ewe lambs with the cutest fluffy ears!

Miss Bree and Monkey… Ram lamb. Little dude looks a little rough right now, but in a couple days he’ll be all shined up.

29 on the ground and just Betty to go. (Still keeping an eye on the open ones 🤣)

Gen Pop is on creep and growing like weeds.

Lamb buying season is already going. No better time to start stocking up on what you need before they are home.

We aren't a household name - but we stand by our quality. We took the favorites and made them better. Sewing machine will be back to humming with lambing wrapping up in our barn. We keep them simple to keep them economical. Quality material, sticky velcro. Still recommend electrical tape over the closure as sheep are as****es. Select colors available.

Make sure to order ahead of time. We prefer a week + lead time as well both have full time jobs, part time jobs not to mention the kids and the animals.

Local pick up - shipping and deliver available to select sales when ordered 1 week prior.

Oh Mae Mae 😍
23 & 24

More Buckeye babes 👏

The saddest part of this year is the retirement of the old flock. The girls showed their age this year but they all put in their work and it’s time for greener pastures.

The 16th of February came in clutch….

Mixed pair from Benzo (Sweet RelieFF x Bree-JFSS22181: Popcorn x Gustavo/MacFlurry/38 Special) x Rachel-JFSS24235 (Shorsey x Gustavo/Prada)

Ram lambs Monkey (Crenshaw x JFSS 3036)x Amthauer 19050 (Tito x Security/Last Call)

19050 and Monkey made our Walworth County Fair Champion Shropshire last year…. AWA2406. To say the boys were excited to see another set is an understatement.

Us adults were stocked on the Rachel lambs. A couple little future rockstars.

22 on the ground. 5 more mommas to go!

Just dry ….15 & 16😍

2327 and Buckeye dropped some new twins tonight.

2327 isn’t the most likely candidate to build replacements, but she’ll make some really nice carcass lambs! Her side Blueberry was a massively thick speck - that built a number of lambs that did well in the carcass competitions.

Hold on tight. 8 more to go and snow is coming

Remember when I said something about the questionables in the other barn?

We listen and we don’t judge …..

So…. Suprise! Another Benzo baby!

Tripod had a ewe lamb! She got moved up there a bit ago because she scanned open and didn’t look like she was doing anything.

So then there was 2514…..

The magical ✨ half way point ✨ of lambing! (If you don’t include the questionables in the other barn)…..

I love lambing with my whole heart, however the amount of energy drinks I consume during this time is quite astounding. Don’t judge me 🤣🤣 I’ll never know how bigger producers do it. Hats off to you folks.

Any way….
