Why We Don’t Post Every Rescue or Adoption

We love sharing happy updates, rescue stories, and adoption posts when we can, but we also want to explain why you don’t see every animal, every intake, or every adoption posted publicly.

Some situations are private. Some animals come from sensitive circumstances. Some owners surrendering animals are going through hardship, loss, illness, or major life changes. Our goal is never to shame anyone. Our goal is to help the animal.

We also don’t always post every adoption right away because we want to make sure the animal is settling in, the placement is working well, and everyone involved is comfortable with what is shared.

Sometimes we are simply too busy doing the work. Between intakes, care, cleaning, feeding, transport, vet needs, messages, applications, and daily life, social media is only one small part of what we do.

Just because you don’t see it posted does not mean it isn’t happening.

We share what we can, when we can, while protecting the privacy, safety, and dignity of the people and animals involved.

Thank you to everyone who supports Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation. Every share, donation, kind word, and adoption helps us keep doing this work.

ATTENTION BIRD OWNERS

We want to make our followers aware that there has reportedly been an outbreak of Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) in the Atlanta area. Because this disease can spread easily through contaminated surfaces, feather dust, droppings, and direct contact, we strongly encourage bird owners to take extra precautions right now.

What is PBFD?

PBFD is a serious viral disease that affects parrots and other birds. It can impact the immune system as well as cause abnormal feather growth, feather loss, beak abnormalities, and other health issues.
Precautions bird owners should take:

• Avoid unnecessary contact with unfamiliar birds

• Do not share cages, toys, food bowls, carriers, or perches between birds from different homes

• Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling birds

• Change clothes and disinfect shoes after visiting pet stores, bird expos, rescues, breeders, or other homes with birds

• Disinfect cages, carriers, and supplies regularly using bird-safe cleaning methods

• Quarantine any new bird for a minimum of 30–45 days before introducing them to your current flock

• Watch closely for signs of illness, including feather loss, abnormal feather growth, lethargy, beak changes, or general decline

• Schedule a vet visit if you notice anything concerning or if your bird may have been exposed

If you travel, attend bird-related events, or have contact with multiple birds, please be especially mindful. Preventative steps can make a huge difference in protecting your flock.

As always, if you have questions or need guidance, reach out to us. We may not be veterinarians, but we are always happy to help point people in the right direction.

Please share to help spread awareness and protect our feathered friends.

Things have slowed down a little here at Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue & Rehabilitation — and honestly, we’re enjoying the breather.

Rescue work can come in waves. Some weeks are nonstop intakes, emergency messages, transports, medical concerns, and animals needing a safe place to land. Lately, things have been a little quieter, and that has given us time to focus on the animals already in our care, catch up on daily routines, and take a much-needed moment to breathe.

But we want everyone to know: we are still here.
If you are struggling with an exotic pet, need help finding resources, have questions about proper care, or are facing the difficult decision of surrendering an animal, please reach out. Even if we cannot take every animal directly, we will do our best to connect you with options, partner rescues, or helpful guidance.

Our mission has not changed. We are still here for the animals. We are still here for the owners who need help. And we are still committed to giving exotic pets the best chance possible.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support us, donate, share our posts, and believe in what we do.

🎉🐒 Happy 3rd Birthday, Charlie! 🐒🎉

On Monday, May 26th, we are celebrating a very special little member of Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue & Rehabilitation — Charlie, our common marmoset!

Charlie is a full-time resident here with us and one of our beloved ambassador animals. While he is adorable, intelligent, and full of personality, Charlie also helps us teach an extremely important message: exotic animal ownership comes with both beauty and responsibility.

Through Charlie, we are able to raise awareness about what we do, why proper education matters, and the reality that exotic animals are not easy pets. Marmosets require specialized diets, constant enrichment, proper housing, experienced care, and a lifetime commitment. They may be cute, but they are also complex, demanding animals who deserve far more than impulse ownership.

Charlie helps us start those conversations in a way people remember. He represents the good, the bad, and the responsibility that comes with caring for exotic animals.

If you would like to help celebrate Charlie’s birthday, our Amazon Wishlist has some of his favorite treats and enrichment items on it. Every gift helps us keep our resident and rescue animals happy, healthy, and spoiled in the best way possible. 🎁🐾

Please join us in wishing Charlie a very happy 3rd birthday! 🎂🐒

For those asking he loves freeze dried minnows, Ge**er puffs, dried fruits and veggies, super worms, cereals, nuts, etc....

🦜🐾 Every animal has a story — and at Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation, we’re honored to be part of their next chapter.

From parrots and reptiles to small mammals and other exotic companions, we take in animals who need safety, care, patience, and a second chance. Some come to us because their owners could no longer care for them. Some need rehabilitation, better housing, or a fresh start. Others simply need someone willing to understand them.

Rescue work is not always easy, but it is always worth it.

Every enclosure cleaned, every meal prepared, every vet trip, every adoption, and every late-night check-in is done because these animals matter. They are not disposable. They are not forgotten. They are family.

We are a donation-based rescue and run heavily on community support and out-of-pocket care. One way you can help is by checking out our Smoky Mtn Exotics T-shirt shop. Every shirt helps us raise money for food, supplies, enclosures, medical care, transportation, and the daily needs of the animals in our care.

You get to wear something fun, and the animals get the support they need. 💚

How you can help:
Share our posts
Donate supplies or funds
Shop our T-shirts
Adopt when you’re ready
Educate others about responsible exotic animal care
Support rescue over impulse buying

Thank you to everyone who believes in what we do. The Smoky Mountain community has helped us give so many animals a safer, better future — and we’re just getting started.

Every animal that comes through our doors has a story.

Some come from families who loved them but could no longer care for them. Some come from situations where they were misunderstood, neglected, or simply needed a second chance. No matter where they come from, our goal stays the same: give them proper care, patience, safety, and the opportunity for a better future.

We are a home-based rescue in Pigeon Forge, TN, and we are not open to the public for tours, but the work never stops behind the scenes. From cleaning cages and preparing diets to medical care, enrichment, adoptions, transport, and education, every day is built around helping exotic animals get the care they deserve.

We run 100% on donations and self-funding, and every bit of support helps us continue this mission. Whether it is supplies, food, donations, sharing our posts, or simply helping educate others about responsible exotic animal ownership, it all makes a difference.

Thank you to everyone who supports Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation. Because of you, more animals get a second chance.

We’re so excited to be a part of the Rockstar Rescue Tour this year!

It means so much to stand alongside several of our partner facilities and rescues we work with, including:

Northeast Tennessee Avian Rescue and Rehabilitation
Wild One's Avian Rescue, Inc
Animale Sanctuary

We’re incredibly thankful for this opportunity to help promote rescue, education, and awareness for exotic animals and the organizations working hard every day to make a difference.

A huge thank you goes out to all of the amazing sponsors who help make events like this possible. Your support helps shine a light on the importance of rescue work, proper animal care, enrichment, and education.

We’re honored to be included and look forward to helping spread the message about the animals and the rescues that need us most. Thank you for supporting this mission and for helping us make an impact together.

Great news from Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue and Rehabilitation!

Holly, our roughly 4-year-old cockatiel, has officially been adopted and is heading into her new forever home.

Every adoption means so much to us because it gives these animals a fresh start, a safe place to land, and a family ready to love them for who they are. Holly is such a sweet little bird, and we’re so happy to see her begin this next chapter.

Thank you to her adopter for choosing rescue and giving Holly the home she deserves. Happy tails… or in Holly’s case, happy feathers!

Haku Update! 🦜💚

We got a wonderful update on Haku, one of our birds who was adopted almost two months ago.
His new family drove 6 hours to pick him up, and it makes us so happy to see that he is thriving and doing amazing in his new home. Updates like this mean the world to us.

Rescue work is not always easy, but seeing animals settle in, bond with their people, and live the lives they deserve reminds us exactly why we do this.

Thank you to Haku’s family for loving him and giving him such a great home. We love getting updates from our adopters!

Happy life, Haku! 🦜✨
