From our feathered friends who scream louder than any haunted house, to our slithery residents who give some people the chills, we've got plenty of tricks, treats, and exotic creatures! 🦎🐀🕷️

While you're enjoying the Halloween festivities, remember that some of the scariest things for exotic animals aren't ghosts or monsters — they're neglect, abandonment, and improper care.

🦜❤️ A VERY SPECIAL ADOPTION OPPORTUNITY! MEET BOO & TIGGER! ❤️🦜

At Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue & Rehabilitation, we recently welcomed two very special birds into our care, and we're now beginning the search for their perfect forever home!

These aren't your average adoption candidates. Boo and Tigger are both estimated to be 30–40 years old, and they've spent their ENTIRE lives together. Our goal is to make sure they get to spend the rest of their lives together, too! ❤️

🩶 MEET BOO – African Grey Parrot

Boo is incredibly intelligent, full of personality, and has quite the vocabulary! Fair warning: this handsome gentleman has a bit of a potty mouth! 🤬😂

Boo is also missing one eye, but don't let that fool you! It doesn't slow him down or stop him from being the amazing bird he is.

💚 MEET TIGGER – Yellow-Naped Amazon

Tigger is a little more reserved and prefers to take things at his own pace. He's a beautiful bird who deserves a patient, understanding home where he can feel safe and comfortable.

💕 A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT THIS PAIR:

🦜 Both birds have been together their entire lives, and keeping them together is our priority.

🦜 Both birds tend to prefer female caregivers.

🦜 Both will need new, appropriately sized cages.

🦜 Both require experienced owners who understand the commitment involved in caring for medium and large parrots.

🚨 PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING! 🚨

This adoption will be handled differently from our typical adoptions.

📅 Applications will be accepted through Saturday, October 31, 2026.

We are NOT operating on a first-come, first-served basis. We will carefully review applications to find the best possible placement for these two.

✅ Proof of previous ownership and experience with medium and/or large parrots WILL BE REQUIRED.

✅ Applicants must be prepared for the financial, emotional, and lifelong commitment these birds require.

✅ This will NOT be an inexpensive adoption. Serious, financially prepared applicants only, please.

✅ Our priority is finding a stable, knowledgeable, loving home that can accommodate BOTH birds and their individual needs.

Because after 30–40 years together, Boo and Tigger deserve more than just another home. They deserve stability, patience, understanding, and someone who will love them for exactly who they are.

🎉🐾 TWO YEARS OF RESCUE, REHABILITATION & SECOND CHANCES! 🦜🐍

October 17th officially marked 2 YEARS of Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue & Rehabilitation! ❤️

What started as a passion for helping parrots in need has grown into something bigger than we ever imagined.

Over the past two years, we've expanded from Smoky Mtn Parrot Rescue into an organization that now includes Smoky Mtn Serpent Rescue, Smoky Mountain Fish Rescue, and our broader exotic animal rescue efforts.

We've taken in animals from heartbreaking situations, helped families facing impossible decisions, provided education, and worked tirelessly to give countless exotic animals the second chances they deserve.

But behind every successful rescue are the things most people never see. The sleepless nights, emergency calls, endless cleaning, veterinary expenses, long-distance transports, and personal sacrifices. Running a volunteer-operated, largely self-funded rescue isn't easy, and there have certainly been moments when we've questioned how we'd keep going.

But then we look at the animals we've helped, and we're reminded exactly why we started. ❤️

To our volunteers, fosters, adopters, supporters, rescue partners, and everyone who has trusted us with an animal they love: THANK YOU.

We wouldn't be where we are today without you.

We're incredibly proud of how far we've come, but we're even more excited about what's ahead. There are still so many animals that need help, so many people who need education, and so much more work to be done.

Two years down, and we're just getting started! 🐾

Today, we want to take a moment to recognize someone who plays a huge role in Smoky Mtn Serpent Rescue!

Without Jessica, we never would have been able to bring our serpent facility to life. She's my go-to girl for anything and everything reptile-related, and her knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help have been invaluable to our rescue.

A lot of what Jessica does happens behind the scenes, and while it may not always be seen by the public, that doesn't make her contributions any less important. She's a huge part of what keeps things running, and we couldn't do what we do without her!

Jessica, thank you for everything you do, the countless hours you put in, and for helping turn a vision into reality.

🦜🔊 TURN UP THE VOLUME! Meet Some of the Loudest Parrots in Captivity!

Thinking about bringing a parrot into your home? Before falling in love with those beautiful feathers and big personalities, there's something you should know… SOME PARROTS ARE LOUD! 📢

Parrots communicate naturally through screaming, squawking, calling, and vocalizing. For some species, those calls can be absolutely ear-piercing!

🏆 MEET SOME OF THE LOUDEST PET PARROTS!

🦜 1. Moluccan Cockatoo
Often considered one of the loudest companion parrots! Their powerful screams can carry incredible distances. They're affectionate, intelligent, and extremely demanding of attention.

🦜 2. Large Macaws
Blue-and-gold, scarlet, and green-winged macaws are famous for their explosive contact calls. Their screams can easily be heard throughout a home and beyond!

🦜 3. Umbrella Cockatoo
Don't let their cuddly appearance fool you! Umbrella cockatoos can produce incredibly loud, piercing screams, especially when excited or seeking interaction.

🦜 4. Sun Conure
Small bird, MASSIVE voice! Sun conures are notorious for their sharp, high-pitched calls. Their volume often surprises first-time bird owners.

🦜 5. Amazon Parrots
Many Amazons are enthusiastic vocalizers, particularly around sunrise and sunset. Some species can produce remarkably powerful calls.

🦜 6. Eclectus Parrots
Often quieter throughout the day than some other large parrots, but their sudden, sharp alarm calls can be startlingly loud!

🦜 7. Indian Ringneck Parakeets
Their high-pitched contact calls can be repetitive, piercing, and difficult to ignore, especially in smaller living spaces.

⚠️ DID YOU KNOW?

Some large parrots can produce calls exceeding 100 decibels at close range! Exact measurements vary by species, individual bird, distance, and testing conditions.

💚 LOUD DOESN'T MEAN BAD!

Screaming and calling are natural parts of parrot communication. Even a happy, healthy, well-enriched bird will vocalize.

Before adopting, consider:

✅ Your living situation and neighbors

✅ Your tolerance for loud, repetitive sounds

✅ Your ability to provide enrichment and social interaction

✅ The possibility of decades of daily vocalizations

Remember: You cannot train a parrot to stop being a parrot!

❤️🐾 Rescue doesn't stop just because you're sick.

I woke up this morning with an extremely sore throat, no voice, and feeling absolutely miserable. I called off from my regular job, and honestly, all I want to do is stay in bed.

But there's one job I can't call off from... running a rescue.

There are still animals to feed, cages to clean, water bowls to fill, emails to answer, and paperwork piling up.

The animals don't know I'm sick. They don't understand exhaustion or needing a day off. They just know they depend on me.

People see the cute animals, happy endings, and successful adoptions. What they don't always see are the sacrifices, sleepless nights, exhaustion, and days like today when you have to force yourself out of bed because lives depend on you.

There are no sick days in rescue. No pause button. It never stops.

I'm not sharing this for sympathy, but to show the reality behind running a rescue. It's rewarding, but it's also physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting.

Even on the days I have nothing left to give, the animals still need me. And that's why I keep going. ❤️🐾

🎉🐍 **Happy Birthday, Tre!** 🦜🐾

Today, we want to take a moment to wish a very happy birthday to someone who plays a huge role in Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue & Rehabilitation!

Tre serves on our Board of Directors and is one of those people who does a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes that most people never get to see.

From offering advice and sharing his knowledge to helping us navigate some of the more unusual situations we encounter, Tre is an important part of what keeps this organization going.

One thing I personally appreciate about Tre is that he's my go-to person when we take in an animal or species I haven't worked with before. No matter how much experience you have working with exotics, there's always something new to learn, and having someone knowledgeable you can call on makes a world of difference.

Running a rescue that works with such a wide variety of animals isn't always easy, and having people like Tre in our corner makes it a whole lot easier.

Tre, thank you for everything you do for our animals, our organization, and the people behind it. Your time, knowledge, and dedication don't go unnoticed, even when most of your work happens outside the spotlight.

When you think about donating to an animal rescue, food and money probably come to mind first — but there are a TON of everyday items that we go through constantly at Smoky Mtn Exotics Rescue & Rehabilitation!

Some things we can always put to good use:

📰 Old newspapers — seriously, save them for us! We use a LOT.

🛏️ New or gently used sheets, blankets & pillowcases

🧺 New or gently used towels & washcloths

🧻 Paper towels

🧼 Animal Safe Cleaning supplies

🗑️ Trash bags

📦 Cardboard boxes

🧤 Disposable gloves

🥣 Stainless steel bowls & dishes

🧸 Animal-safe toys & enrichment items

🐾 Pet carriers, crates & usable cages/enclosures

Even something that seems small can save us money and supplies that can then be put toward the care of the animals.

With the number and variety of animals that come through our doors, we can find a use for some pretty unexpected things!

Before throwing those old newspapers or extra towels away, think of the rescue. ❤️
