For #AmericanHeartHealthMonth we are spreading awareness of canine endocarditis. Endocarditis is most common in middle-aged and older dogs, especially larger breeds.
Endocarditis occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and lodge on the valves of the heart. These bacteria may originate from a systemic (body-wide) infection, a skin wound, an abscess, a surgical procedure, or even severe dental disease.
Early signs may be difficult to spot, but could include weight loss and lethargy. In later stages, dogs may develop heart failure which includes signs such as cough, exercise intolerance, weakness, and shortness of breath.
If your dog is experiencing any of the above symptoms call us for an appointment, 360-683-2106.
