Premack’s Principle is a behavioral concept that can be used in dog training. Also known as as “Grandma’s rule” you essentially have to complete a less desirable task before getting to do something highly desirable. A dog training example could be that you work your dog on “stay” for 5 minutes before playing one of their favorite games as demonstrated below. This will make the less desirable behavior more desirable over time because of the anticipation for the highly desirable behavior that follows.
