QCW Schatzie had her annual dental visit with The Pet Dentist and was such a brave girl! During her exam, a CT scan revealed bone loss around her left upper canine tooth, a reminder of just how important regular dental care is, especially for our senior companions. 🦷💚

As pets age, they’re more susceptible to dental disease, which can impact their overall health and comfort. Routine dental checkups help catch issues early and keep those tails wagging longer.

🐾Don’t let Easter celebrations turn into a pet emergency!

While lilies are a common gift and decoration for Easter, we want to remind all pet parents about the dangers of lilies to our furry friends.

Easter lilies, peace lilies, and calla lilies are toxic to cats and dogs. Remember, all parts of the plants are dangerous - from the stem to the pollen. Even the water in a vase or pot can pose a threat.

If you suspect your pet has ingested any part of a lily, don’t hesitate to contact your vet immediately! For urgent assistance, call the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661.

Let’s keep our pets safe and healthy this Easter 🐰 💚🌈

🐾 Navigating the difficult decision of saying goodbye to a furry friend is never easy.

Dr. B reminds us, “There’s no such thing as ‘the right time’ for euthanasia. There is a zone between too early and too late, and we hope we can land somewhere in that zone.” At Helping Hands Pet Hospice, we aim to guide you through that delicate zone. Reach out for compassionate end-of-life care. 🌈💚

🚨 Protect Your Pets: Leptospirosis Cases on the Rise! 🚨

Recent reports confirm cases of Leptospirosis in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. This bacterial infection spreads through contaminated water, soil, and the urine of infected wildlife—posing a serious risk to both pets and humans.

🩺 How to Keep Your Pet Safe:
🐾 Ensure vaccinations are up to date – the Lepto vaccine is highly effective!
💧 Avoid stagnant water and areas with high wildlife activity.
👀 Watch for symptoms like fever, vomiting, lethargy, and increased thirst.
🏥 Seek veterinary care immediately if your pet shows signs of illness.

Staying proactive with routine vet visits and vaccinations is key to keeping your furry family members safe. If your pet is a senior or immunocompromised, extra precautions are essential.

📢 Check with your vet today to confirm your pet is protected! 🐶🐱 💚

One of the hardest things we see as pet parents is a large dog🐾 in crisis who can’t be moved. Whether due to arthritis pain or a sudden collapse, it can be terrifying when you realize you can’t physically move your beloved pet. But there are steps you can take to prepare and ease this burden.

Here are a few tips from Dr. Cherie Buisson’s latest blog, Planning Like a Big Dog:

💚 Create an emergency plan: Just like hurricane preparedness, plan for your pet’s emergency care.

💚 Have a helping hand: Make sure you’ve got backup for moving your pet. A friend, neighbor, or loved one who’s strong enough to help.

💚 Invest in a stretcher: It’s a game-changer in a crisis. Blankets might not be enough for safe lifting.

💚 Keep them on the ground floor: Moving large pets upstairs can be risky—avoid carrying them down in a rush.

💚 Prepare for bites: Crisis situations can make even the gentlest pets lash out. Muzzle training can help.

💚 Talk to your vet: Pain control and sedatives can help prevent unnecessary suffering during emergencies.

💚 Reach out early: Contact home euthanasia services in advance to avoid last-minute panic.

👉 Read the full blog on our website for more tips and peace of mind.

Your pet trusts you to make these tough decisions. 💚 Be prepared to give them the comfort and dignity they deserve.

This photo of Muggle, Dr. B’s beloved dachshund, shows the early signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD or Dog Dementia). He was ready for bed, yet he forgot to get all the way in before falling asleep.

A dog’s risk for dementia increases significantly each year past age 10 and supporting our beloved furry friends through dementia involves understanding the nuances of their journey, including moments of forgetfulness and the challenges of sundowners.

While we can’t halt the progression, we can take steps to ease their path. 🌟 Here’s a few tips to enhance the quality of life for your canine companion:

1️⃣ Mental Stimulation: Engage your pup’s mind with puzzle toys and interactive games, especially crucial for dogs becoming forgetful. Mental exercises can help delay cognitive decline and promote a sense of accomplishment.

2️⃣ Tailored Nutrition: Collaborate with your vet to design a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, known to support brain health. This nutritional approach can aid in slowing down the effects of doggy dementia.

3️⃣ Exercise and Mobility: Incorporate low-impact exercises into your routine to improve blood flow to the brain and maintain muscle strength. Regular, gentle walks are beneficial for dogs experiencing sundowners, helping them expend energy and promoting better sleep.

4️⃣ Routine and Comfort: Establishing a consistent daily routine is essential for dogs with sundowners, reducing anxiety and confusion during the evening hours. Create a safe and familiar environment to provide comfort and security.

Remember, each pet’s experience is unique, and our team at Helping Hands Pet Hospice is here to offer guidance and support. If you notice changes in your dog’s behavior or have questions about caring for a pet with dementia, reach out for a Quality of Life Consultation. 🐕💚

Senior pets bring us endless love and loyalty, and they deserve the very best care as they age. 💚 Helping Hands Pet Hospice’s mission is to support senior pets with specialized care to keep them comfortable and happy.

Check out our top tips 📋 on how to care for your senior pets. 🐶 🐱

1. Schedule regular vet visits.
As pets age, their health needs change. Schedule check-ups every 6 months to monitor for common senior conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, or diabetes.

2. Provide a senior-friendly diet.
Switch to age-appropriate food with the right balance of nutrients. Look for options that support joint health, heart health, and weight management.

3. Keep them active with gentle exercise.
Regular, low-impact activities like short walks or light playtime help maintain muscle strength and prevent stiffness.

4. Monitor their weight.
Obesity can exacerbate health issues in senior pets. Adjust portion sizes and treats to keep your pet at a healthy weight.

5. Create a comfortable living space.
Provide soft bedding, ramps for easier access to furniture or stairs, and non-slip mats to reduce the risk of falls.

6. Watch for behavioral changes.
Keep an eye out for increased restlessness, aggression, or withdrawal, which could signal pain or discomfort.

7. Maintain dental hygiene.
Senior pets are more prone to dental disease. Brush their teeth regularly and schedule dental cleanings with your veterinarian.

8. Offer mental stimulation.
Keep their minds sharp with puzzle toys, new scents, or gentle training exercises. Mental engagement can help prevent cognitive decline.

Supporting your senior pet’s health and happiness is an ongoing journey, and small changes can make a big difference! 🌈
