Busy night at the vet clinic! We’ve treated THREE snake bite cases in just one evening here in Oklahoma. 🐍🚑 As we head into the peak of snake season (April through October, with August being especially active due to warmer temps), it’s a reminder for all pet owners to stay vigilant.
Oklahoma is home to seven venomous snake species, including copperheads (the most common culprit, responsible for nearly half of our ~300 annual bites statewide), cottonmouths, and various rattlesnakes. Pets exploring outdoors—especially in tall grass, wooded areas, or near water—are at higher risk of encounters.
Signs of a snake bite in your pet:
• Sudden swelling, pain, or bruising at the site
• Lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing
• Bleeding from the wound or gums
Prevention tips:
• Keep dogs leashed on walks and avoid high-risk areas.
• Clear brush and debris from your yard.
• Consider snake avoidance training for adventurous pups.
If you suspect a bite, DON’T wait—rush to your vet immediately! Antivenom and supportive care can make all the difference and we keep antivenom on hand for emergencies!
All patients are currently stable and recovering well, but let’s keep our furry friends safe out there!
