Keep your horses at home!!
Don't buy a horse at an auction!!
Don't go from barn to barn transmitting germs on your hands, shoes and clothes to other horses!!
So I find this story pretty interesting and why having a system in place portable corral or otherwise to be able to quarantine is as essential as owning a halter!
There’s a new confirmed neurologic EHV‑1 (equine herpesvirus) case in Northeast Texas that’s now officially under quarantine — and it could impact local horse movement and travel in the coming days.
According to the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), a donkey in Bowie County, Texas has tested positive for EHV‑1 with neurologic signs and is under official quarantine. The animal was recently acquired at a livestock sale and transferred to a referral hospital when neurological symptoms developed; this case is explicitly not linked to the large Waco outbreak that’s been widely reported. This update replaces older information on the EDCC site from December 15 and adds urgency because it may influence local movement restrictions, quarantine enforcement, and rider travel plans in Northeast Texas over the next several days (roughly through Dec 23–26). EDCC’s alert listings also show several other quarantine releases or resolved situations in other states on December 22 (e.g., EHV‑1 and other equine diseases) — but there’s still no broad lifting of movement restrictions in places like Arizona, Oklahoma, California, or South Dakota as of late December 22. Local equine facilities, event organizers, and traveling horse owners should confirm quarantine status and movement rules with state animal health officials or veterinarians before planning travel or competition.
