We're looking for a responsible and dependable Kennel Assistant who can provide care and basic needs of animals that are being cared for and boarded at our clinic. Must effectively be able to read, speak, and write in English. Must have basic computer literacy skills and be able to handle multiple unrelated tasks simultaneously while working in a busy environment. Must also be able to lift 50Lbs, work on feet all day, and write legibly. Must be customer service oriented and friendly. Professional appearance required and scrubs must be worn while on the clock. Must be able to work all shifts, including nights and weekends (Saturdays). Kennel Assistant will be required to be at work when scheduled and be on time. Must be able to properly restrain animals, including fractious pets. Must be able to medicate boarding patients orally. Employee must be able to work well independently and in a group. Upon hiring, all new employees will be subject to a 90-day probationary period during which time employment may be terminated as determined by management. All aforementioned requirements are subject to change by the employer at any time.
Essential Functions:
-Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition and any signs of disease or illness and report to veterinarian or veterinary technician
-Must be comfortable with animals of all sizes and breeds
-Must be able to assist with animal restraint using proper procedures
-Walk hospitalized and boarded dogs several times a day to provide exercise and bathroom breaks
-Apply knowledge of normal food and liquid requirements as well as special medication requirements for hospitalized and boarded pets
-Assure boarding pets have all their belongings and are clean and smell fresh prior to discharge
-Ensure animals are properly identified in their kennels as well as any personal property (toys, leashes, blankets, special food) are stored in the proper area and identified
-Obtain stool or urine samples as assigned
-Perform laundry duties-washing and drying of blankets, towels, etc.
-Clean, disinfect, and maintain kennels, cages, and runs as often as necessary to ensure they are clean, and free of odors
-Perform general cleaning in areas of the hospital to prevent the spread of disease
Patrol hospital grounds daily, picking up any trash or stool material
-Empty trash and take it to the designated area on trash pick-up day
-Record information such as feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior of animals that are boarded or hospitalized
-Maintain areas through proper stocking and cleaning
-Perform other duties as assigned
Work Environment:
Small animal hospital, work with a high level of client interaction, exposure to x-rays and anesthetic gases with proper protective measures. Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and possible hazardous materials.
