A little backstory on “The Cat House Cat Café”, coming right here to Sebring this fall 🐈
Y’all already know the part about us honoring the iconic “Cathouse Restaurant” that used to sit on the corner of Circle Park Dr. and S. Commerce Ave… but the “why” behind a Cat Café here in Sebring is more personal than that.
Many of us have known the joy of having a pet that was a best friend to them. Sami wasn’t really mine…He was my aunt Sally and uncle Larry’s- but he was the closest thing my own kitty I could get. And if you don’t know me yet…it’s important to know that I’m adopted and my aunt and uncle helped raised me. They were some of my favorite people to ever walk this earth.
I helped choose Sami at an adoption event- my aunt and uncle ended up taking TWO orange cats home that day because I refused to let them leave him.
Growing up, I listened to stories of how my aunt and uncle saved countless cats. Never as anything official… but they almost always had 4-5 cats in their care and they were always ALL rescues. For like 40 years.
To this day I remember lore of kitties that were rescued off the cold Chicago roads. A cat that would reportedly “sit at the bar” my parents owned in the 80’s- he was just one of the guys. One that was named “Faceless, Nameless, but definitely not Homeless” (faceless for short).
Their stories of rescuing cats off the street together spanned from the 1980’s to the 2020’s, only ending with them passing away. The stories went from Chicago, to Wisconsin, to Florida, and I just remember how much each cat meant to them.
Even the ones that weren’t the most lovey- they were just happy to give the cats a safe home.
Sami was a lover though, and he is one of those cats I will never forget, partially because I KNEW his lore firsthand. He was goofy, loved a good dive bomb, playful, and loved treats. A good orange 🍊
All to say… My aunt, uncle and their cat rescue stories are such a huge part behind our inspiration to open “The Cat House Cat Café”. When my uncle passed away, their entire life savings went to a large cat foundation. Their way to give back a bit of positivity to this world was thru cat rescue. They believed that pets (cats, in their case) can rescue us… so why wouldn’t they try to rescue the ones they could?
Seeing the need in our community, like the overpopulation of colonies, cats being euthanized… I saw an opportunity to honor my aunt and uncle, all while doing some good in the process.
The Cat House Cat Café is going to do just that. We’re SO excited to be bringing some more unique fun to downtown Sebring in the process!
