What does healthy dog communication look like when a puppy gets a little too close?

Ray is showing this puppy exactly where his boundaries are — without turning the interaction into a fight.

Dogs communicate constantly through body language: a look, a pause, turning away, moving off, or a brief correction can all mean “I need some space.” When the other dog understands and respects that communication, there’s no need for the interaction to escalate.

These moments are an important part of puppy socialization. Puppies need opportunities to learn that other dogs have boundaries, and learning to read those signals is a huge part of becoming a socially fluent dog.

The goal isn’t for dogs to tolerate everything. It’s for them to communicate clearly, listen to each other, and feel safe enough to move away when they’ve had enough.

One of our Wild Packers is in the news📸!

Meet Lena, a sweet Rat Terrier / Chihuahua mix and beloved part of the pack.

She’s a familiar face on our trainer-led weekly pack walks, where she gets to explore the city, sniff, socialize and enjoy time with her friends.

We’re so excited to see this little lady featured in Seattle Refined’s RUFFined Spotlight!

We think we take dogs outside because they need the walk.

But one of the quiet gifts of living with a dog is that they get us outside, too.

Out of the house. Away from the screen. Moving our bodies. Following a path instead of a schedule. Paying attention to what’s around us.

For dogs, this kind of walk is more than physical exercise. It’s sensory enrichment.

New scents, changing terrain, environmental sounds and the freedom to investigate give dogs opportunities to use the sensory and cognitive systems they evolved to rely on. Sniffing and exploring aren’t just distractions from the walk — they are part of how dogs gather information about their world.

And importantly, having some choice over where they move and what they investigate adds an element of agency, which can make an experience more enriching than simply walking for distance or speed.

Ray gets to run, sniff and explore.

I get to move, breathe, notice the water, feel the sun and spend a little time in the world instead of in my head.

The walk is enrichment for both of us 🤎🧠

We recently shared Peggy’s rescue story — a little terrier who came from an incredibly difficult start. When she came to stay with us for 10 days of training, we we knew that her journey wasn’t going to be about obedience alone.

For Peggy, training started with feeling safe.

We focused on:
🐾 Decompression and settling into a new environment
👃 Instinct-led enrichment and nosework
🌿 Introducing novelty in small, manageable steps
🧠 Building communication and confidence through training

Rather than asking Peggy to simply “push through,” we worked at her pace and paid attention to what her body language was telling us.

And over those 10 days, we watched her become more comfortable exploring, learning, engaging and trying new things.

The biggest change wasn’t what Peggy learned. It was how much more confident she became in trying.

We love you Peggy - sniff on girl🤎

Have a puppy who is biting?

Puppies explore the world mouth-first — biting is how they learn bite pressure, texture, and cause and effect. Teething adds fuel to it too, since most puppies are losing baby teeth and growing adult ones between 3-6 months.

Punishing it — scruffing, yelping loudly, holding the muzzle shut — doesn’t teach bite inhibition, it just teaches them biting makes hands scary.

What actually works: redirect to an appropriate chew the moment teeth touch skin — and make sure that chew or toy is higher value than whatever they were trying to bite, or the swap won’t hold their interest.

Then calmly withdraw attention for a few seconds after. Consistency teaches the lesson, not correction. In fear-free training, this is how we build bite inhibition without building fear.
