We were looking for a dog to heal our hearts, as our previous dog Didi had left us far too soon. A small dog was our goal, so it was off to the shelter with us.

We went to the first Pop Up Adoption that the RSPCA had ever had in Brisbane, Australia, with high hopes. Unfortunately, all the smaller or medium-sized dogs were being adopted so fast that I couldn't find anything.

My kids were young and bored with the whole process, so my wife took them out of the event to play on the nearby playground. The responsibility fell to me to find a suitable pet.

I continued to wander from aisle to aisle until I came across a young lad that wasn't barking like the others. He just sat there with a dignity and grace wagging his tail.

I walked over to say hello, and we immediately bonded; he refused to leave my side. So he had made his choice, I was his.

I called my wife to tell her that I had found a dog. When she saw him, her jaw dropped. He was a lot bigger than we had planned to adopt. But adopt him we did.

His story was a sad one. He had been surrendered at 6 months and had been living in a shelter for 12 months. Twelve months of patiently waiting for someone to adopt him. For some reason, he had been passed over for all that time.

Well, he became a part of our family straight away. My kids and wife love him and he loves them. But he and I have special bond. He brings me his toys whenever I get home, and he greets me with a neverending excited tail that could power a small city with its movement.

He loves rough play but is as gentle as a lamb when asked to be. He is super intelligent and always eager to go for a walk, saying hi to everyone he meets.

He is my Rexy boy, and I adore all 33 kilograms of him. We have had him for 8.5 years now and are hoping that he will live for a while yet. But we will be happy to have what ever time he has and will love him every day.

Being a touring musician from Cincinnati, Ohio, you never know what you will encounter on the road...

On a break between tours, we were staying at a friend's place in Texas. They treated us to an awesome grill out the day we arrived. Out of the corner of my eye, two Chiweenie pups and a mama Chihuahua came running up to the fence with their little noses fluttering to the smell of the barbecue.

The mama and boy pup both had nasty collars that were imbedded in their skin. They both looked infected pretty badly. All of them were in need of some water and food, so we decided to let them enjoy our barbecue.

I've never seen an animal gobble up food so fast! I asked our friends where they came from and they replied that they were not sure. Stray dogs and cats infested that area, being so close to the border of Mexico. Kids would mistreat them, chase them, and throw things at them. We took the dogs in, bathed them, cleaned them, and treated their necks.

With some help from Facebook friends, we found homes for the mama and boy pup, but I was instantly attached to Selena. She was the runt of the two. She was so lovable and sweet! I ended up bringing her with us on tour. The first show we set up a tip jar for her vet bills and amassed over $150 in tips! Everyone loved her and was drawn to how sweet she was! She would camp under my sleeping bag to sleep, and to this day, she still burrows under the blankets.

She's now spoiled and runs the house. She loves her grandma and toy squirrel but destroys every toy on the market. She can't live without her treats. Selena has been to 41 states and has tried every local food... Trust me. She loves her food!

She is my best friend and never leaves my side!

Oh, and yes, we named her Selena after the singer Selena Quintanilla from Texas.

I met Max when I was about 3 years old. My family and I were at the pound looking for our dog that ran away, not expecting to leave with a new one.

As we were getting into our car, a man pulled up with a beautiful Australian Shepherd puppy. He told us he couldn't have pets at his apartment, and he begged us to take the puppy so he didn't have to take him into the pound.

With tears in his eyes and a reluctant look on my mom's face, he successfully found a new home for Tristan. However, we thought the name Max suited him better and changed it right away.

Max became the first best friend I ever had; we grew up together. He slept by my bed when I was afraid of the dark, let me lay my head on him and cry when I had my heart broken, was the biggest goofball when I needed a laugh, and a star athlete when I needed a playmate.

He was also my body guard and a great sport when I wanted to paint his claws, though not the best tanning partner, as he enjoyed the shade. I looked out for him, too. He was very afraid of thunder and fireworks, so I would hold him in my arms all night long until the noises stopped and his body quit shaking. I wouldn't let anyone lay a hand on him, but I would lay into anyone who tried.

Though his physical presence is no longer with me, I know he'll always be with me in spirit, protecting me as he always has. My buddy, my pal, my goofball, my sweetheart, my angel, my best friend, my Maxie Boy.

I was eight years old when a black dog began living on our sidewalk. He was a chow mix, black all over, except for a small white patch on his chest. His fur was a jungle of mats, and he had a chain around his neck ( believed to be from the previous owners ).

For months, he would run away from my parents and me when we left him food and water on the sidewalk everyday. If you tried to touch him, he would snarl and run away, but he always returned to his place on our sidewalk.

Finally after months of having a homeless dog on our sidewalk, we decided to lure him into our backyard with some leftovers from Panda Express. With luck, we got him in our backyard, but he still ran away from us and protested every time we tried to pet him.

A month after keeping him, I was running around in my backyard when I chose to sit on the bench and give affection to my longterm dog, Gloria. That's when I felt the head of the homeless dog rest on my lap, and for the first time ever, he let me touch him. It was as if he was letting me know he trusted me, and that he accepted his new home.

From that day on, he has been my dog. Now that I am 19 years old and in college, he is now an old dog. Toto was the name I gave him when I was 8, and he turns 13 this year.

Gray around the eyes and muzzle, he spends his old dog days bossing around the younger dogs, sleeping on the couch, and snoring on my floor at night while I read. It was almost as if he adopted us instead of us adopting him. We make each other happy, and he will always be my soulmate in dog form.

In August, we decided to get a playmate for our first dog. We drove about half an hour to this small shelter and picked out our perfect little baby, a black Lab. When we took Nismo home, we saw that he was covered in fleas, and his fur was all types of matted and dirty.

I couldn't bear the thought of my new fur baby being mistreated, so we stuck him in the bath and kept bathing him for an hour and a half. We thought that was the worst of our problems.

We took him to the vet a few days later, only to find out that our boy was very sick and on the brink of death. Our vet didn't think he would last the night. She told us that he had tapeworms and he was too sick to survive.

She took him home and watched over him for the night. After many medications and blood transfusions, they gave us the option to put him down. I refused to believe that he was going to die. I told them I wanted to wait until the morning to make that call and to give him one more night.

When we came to see him the next day, he looked healthier and happier! Now, six months later, he is just a happy, bouncing 50-pound Lab that loves to give kisses.

I couldn't imagine a life without our Nismo.

I was on the way to my then-boyfriend's place to go out on the boat for the day. What I didn't realize is how that day would forever change my life.

I had to drive 30 to 40 minutes to get there, and it takes mainly back country roads. As I was driving, I came around a bend. Looking ahead, I saw a gray car sitting with the door ajar facing my way.

I slowed down to see if everyone was okay, and a man came running out and jumped into it and drove off. I looked for a license plate, but he was too fast. As I approached the area he came from, I slowed way down, only to spot a beautiful puppy come waddling out of the woods.

Where he had dumped her, she would have either been eaten by coyotes or run over. I jumped out and grabbed her.

She was a little hesitant and a little shy around men, but I don't know what she went through in that short amount of time in her life.

That day in July, she became my best friend. I ended the wrong relationship and stayed busy taking care of my pup. What I didn't know what that she was and is my gift from God. I rescued her, but she also rescued me.

I honestly didn't plan to keep her at first, but she and I needed each other, and I couldn't let her go after a few weeks of looking for another home for her. She is now spoiled as ever and has given me more laughs that I could count, not to mention that she is so very loyal.

Meet Desmond.

He is one of countless homeless dogs who live on the streets of Romania. He has had to fight for food and shelter and gone many nights without a meal.

His hard life took a turn for the worse when he sustained a serious injury to his right eye. The protruding eye was clearly infected, and he needed immediate help.

SACHE Foundation came to his rescue and brought him to their vet to be examined. His eye is beyond saving and the only option is to remove it. Desmond is also suffering from malnutrition, dehydration and untreated injuries.

In addition to the physical wounds, he is anxious about his new surroundings. He is used to being on his own and does not trust humans, as they have not been kind to him in the past.

He is slowly learning that not all humans are bad and has been started on pain medication, IV fluids and antibiotics.

Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical Fund is helping with his medical bills but needs your support. The fund was started to help save the lives of dogs like Desmond and give them the second chance at a better life.

Pets receiving critical care facilitated by an Emergency Animal Medical grant may not be eligible for adoption until they have completed their course of treatment. If you would like to inquire about adoption of a specific animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter’s specific website first as that is often the most up to date place to learn about available pets and review the adoption policies and process.

Desmond had enucleation surgery to remove the damaged eye but will need months of treatment to help him regain his health. This resilient pup has a huge personality and once he is healed, he will be the most loyal companion.

Meet Effie.

This one-year-old pup was found unable to move on the side of the road in Romania. A kind person spotted the dog and reached out to SACHE Foundation for help.

The poor dog was in excruciating pain when she arrived at the animal hospital. X-rays revealed that two of her legs are badly fractured and she has an injury to her bladder.

"Despite the overwhelming odds stacked against her, Effie’s spirit remained unbroken. Her eyes, filled with a mix of pain and hope, conveyed her will to survive and her trust in the humans around her," shared the rescue.

Effie has a long road to recovery and will need multiple surgeries to heal her shattered legs and damaged bladder. She has been started on pain medication as she waits to have surgery.

Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund is assisting with her medical bills but needs your continued support. The fund helps save the lives of dogs like Effie and give them a second chance to find a loving home.

Effie has now fully recovered from surgery to repair her damaged bladder and two fractured legs. She is finally able to walk and run again, and she sends her thanks for your support. This sweet girl loves playing with other dogs and is ready to find a forever home.

According to American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the highly contagious parvovirus attacks white blood cells, the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, and damages the heart muscle in puppies.

Unvaccinated puppies are at the highest risk, like Tulip.

The Labrador mix puppy was found in grave condition on the street and needed immediate care. She was taken in by Fix West Texas who started the sick pup on doxycycline, fluids, and medication to help stabilize her.

Tulip’s life was saved thanks to your donations! She beat parvo and has found a forever home. Fix West Texas is grateful for the support and said, “We can't thank Greater Good enough for helping make this a happy ending. Not only for Tulip, but also for her foster, our staff and her new owner. It is truly amazing how many lives Tulip has touched.”Every year, tens of thousands of dogs get canine parvovirus - and many don't survive.

Feeling depressed and overwhelmed by the losses of many friends and family members during the previous few months, including our 10 year old golden Miss Abby, I felt myself heading down that dark place.

One morning, though, I opened up my page and saw two beautiful but sad looking faces staring back at me. Bella and Chloe were sisters and their Grand Mom had posted an ad for adoption. She no longer had the physical stamina or financial means to care for them.

I knew immediately that our beloved Abby had sent them to us to care for. My husband and I went to visit them and saw that their home was less than desirable for these two beautiful senior ladies.

Unfortunately, we had to wait a week before we could bring them home with us, as we were leaving town for Christmas and did not want to put them in a kennel while we were away. Chloe, 10, had several health issues, including foot fungus, ear infections, and a tumor that needed to be addressed immediately. Her older sister Bella, 11, is in great health for her age, other than being a bit on the thin side.

Both are thriving now and are a part of our family, along with their brother KC, our other golden who we adopted four years ago from a shelter.

I thank Abby everyday for sending these two sweet furbabies to us. They have brought us total love and put me back in that sunny, happy place again!

Meet Skye-Lee.

The sweet pup arrived at Rescue Is Life, a rescue in South Africa, covered in fleas and underweight. She went to a foster home for treatment and was quickly adopted by a loving family a couple months later.

Her happily ever after story was just beginning when a health scare occurred. Just a few days after being adopted, Skye-Lee developed a limp in her front leg.

Her concerned family brought her to the vet to be examined and a cancerous mass was found. The only option was to amputate the leg to stop the cancer from spreading.

Greater Good Charities’ Emergency Animal Medical fund was contacted to help cover Skye-Lee's medical bills and ongoing care. The fund was started to help save the lives of injured and sick shelter pets and give them the second chance they deserve.

With proper recovery care, this friendly girl will be able to live a normal life, but she still needs your support. Will you help Skye-Lee get the treatment she needs to heal from cancer?

Pets receiving critical care facilitated by an Emergency Animal Medical grant may not be eligible for adoption until they have completed their course of treatment. If you would like to inquire about adoption of a specific animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter’s specific website first as that is often the most up to date place to learn about available pets and review the adoption policies and process.

The good news is that Skye-Lee is now cancer free! She is adjusting to life at a "tripod" dog and is so grateful for your support.

The Animal Rescue Site along with our partner, Greater Good Charities, dedicates a week to raise as much funds as possible – with your support – to feed hungry dogs and cats in shelters around the country.

Shelters are overcrowded and in desperate need of food donations. Adoptions are down and intakes are up. There are so many mouths to feed.

Help us provide 3 million meals to feed shelter pets around the country, like Lola & Ziggy.

These sweet mama dogs were found emaciated along with newborn puppies.

Midwest City Animal Control (MCAC) responded to a call about severely malnourished dogs and arrived at the residence to find two mama dogs with ribs showing and seven puppies attempting to nurse. They all needed immediate medical attention and were rushed to Safe Haven ABC Clinic.

It was later discovered that the dogs were only being fed oatmeal. They were starving and on the brink of death.

MCAC shared, "When they arrived at the vet clinic, they ate a large bucket of dog food and 3 cans of wet dog food and still acted like they were hungry."

Lola and Ziggy were severely underweight at 31 pounds and unable to provide all the nutrients their puppies needed. Sadly, one of the puppies passed away.

The remaining puppies and mama dogs were taken in by Diane at Fur Ever Friends Rescue & Doggie Day Care. She said this was one of the worst abuse cases she has seen in all her years as a rescue.

Thanks to your generous donations, Lola and Ziggy and their puppies have regained their strength and health. The mama dogs are thriving, and their personalities are starting to emerge.

Both dogs are affectionate and crave attention from humans. The two-year-olds are ready to find forever homes. The puppies (Hershey, Reese's, M&M, McFlurry, Oreo, and Godiva) are also looking for loving homes. Learn more here.

Rescue pets like Lola & Ziggy all over the country need your help. July is one of the busiest months of the year for many shelters and rescues, and more animals means more hungry bellies. Food is the largest expense for shelters and one that they struggle to afford on their minimal budgets.
