It’s 4/20… and while some humans are celebrating, pets definitely should NOT RSVP to that party!

Even small amounts of cannabis can cause:
• Wobbling / loss of balance
• Urinary accidents
• Lethargy or agitation
• Vomiting
• Sensitivity to sound/light

Edibles are especially risky (chocolate + THC = double trouble).

If your pet gets into something today, don’t panic, just call us. No judgment, just care. 💚🐾

Vet visits can be scary for pets and their people.

This patient came in feeling fearful and overwhelmed, but our team met them with patience, compassion, and a calm, gentle approach every step of the way.

Moments like this are a reminder that veterinary care is so much more than medicine. It’s about building trust, creating safety, and showing up with empathy when our patients need it most.

Every pet is different, and some need a little extra support, and that’s exactly what we’re here for. Through specialized training and hands-on experience, our team is equipped to care for even the most anxious patients.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about treatment; it’s about making sure every pet feels safe, supported, and cared for. 🐾

Hands-on learning, guided by experience.

April, with her extensive background in veterinary medicine, is seen here mentoring an LVT student from Pima Medical Institute during a dental procedure.

Investing in the next generation of veterinary professionals is an essential part of advancing patient care, and we’re proud to support that growth every day.

April is Heartworm Awareness Month.

Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites and can affect both dogs and cats. Once infected, treatment can be complex, costly, and in some cases, life-threatening.

Prevention is safe, effective, and significantly easier than treatment.

Heartworm prevention helps:
• Protect against parasitic infection
• Reduce risk of long-term heart and lung damage
• Avoid intensive medical treatment

Even pets that spend most of their time indoors are at risk.

If your pet is not currently on prevention or is overdue, now is a good time to talk with your veterinary team.

And if your pet shows signs such as coughing, lethargy, or difficulty breathing, prompt evaluation is important. Our Urgent Care team is available if concerns arise.

Not an “egg-cellent” situation… 🥚

This festive find? An Easter egg lodged where it definitely doesn’t belong. Foreign body obstructions like this are more common than you’d think, especially around holidays when curious pets get into things they shouldn’t.

What to watch for:
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Abdominal discomfort

If your pet is showing any of these signs, don’t wait. Intestinal blockages can become serious fast and often require surgical intervention.

Let’s keep Easter safe, not surgical. 😉

Digestive health plays a major role in overall wellness.

After several weeks of dietary sensitivity, Paul’s care plan included adding a veterinary-formulated probiotic FortiFlora by to help re-establish intestinal balance and support normal intestinal function.

Targeted probiotics may help:
• Promote beneficial bacterial populations
• Improve stool quality and consistency
• Support immune function through the gut microbiome
• Assist recovery after GI upset

Persistent vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or dehydration should never be ignored. While many cases can be managed with early outpatient care, more severe symptoms may require urgent evaluation.

If your pet is experiencing ongoing digestive issues, speak with your veterinary team about evidence-based options and know that our Urgent Care team is here if symptoms escalate.

Healthy gut. Whole-body health.

During Black History Month, we recognize pioneers whose work shaped veterinary medicine.

Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington became one of the first Black veterinarians in the United States in 1897, opening doors in a profession that was not accessible to many at the time.

Dr. Jane Hinton became one of the first Black women veterinarians in 1949 and co-developed Mueller-Hinton agar, a laboratory standard still used in medicine today.

Their legacy lives on in every clinic, classroom, and patient they helped make possible.

At SVA, we stand in recognition of Black history and the contributions that continue to strengthen our profession and our community. We are grateful for the diversity within our team and thank the Black professionals, caregivers, and staff members who bring their expertise, compassion, and voice to veterinary medicine every day.

Honoring this history reminds us that progress in veterinary medicine is built by many voices.
