I had the pleasure of working on CATCH THE SKY, a book of poems by Robert Heidbreder for Greystone Books, a publisher after my own heart. The collection of poems celebrates the sky we all share. Look for it this fall!

✨Happy Halloween!✨Did you know that some bats, like this lesser long-nosed bat, pollinate the agave plant? Agave co-evolved with bats over thousands of years, so now it’s one of the few plants that gets pollinated at night. So next time you drink some tequila, thank a bat!

Thanks to for the bat facts!

For the past few days, I’ve been scratching my itch for adventure on an epic roadtrip through the Canadian wilderness! Thanks to my Uncle Bill aka Capt Bill, we survived driving through the remote wilderness of Labrador to the very end of the roads in North America. We spent the last two nights at a lighthouse inn on an island at the very northern tip of Newfoundland, where we watched humpbacks swimming nearby and climbed rocky hilltops with no signs of civilization in sight. I had a bit of time to draw this tiny structure on the cliff near the inn where you could take shelter from the wind while keeping a lookout for whales.

We’re currently crossing through Newfoundland to catch a ferry before Hurricane Dorian hits (who would’ve thought a hurricane would make it up here?!) so wish us luck!

The Amazon rainforest hosts the largest biodiversity of any ecosystem in the world and is a valuable source of fresh water and carbon storage for our little planet. Millions of people and animals call it home, but lately unsustainable agricultural practices, illegal deforestation, and land grabbing are destroying it at an alarming rate.

According to the , ‘deforestation of the Amazon has increased rapidly since Mr. Bolsonaro, who was elected in October, took office and his government cut back on efforts to confront illegal activity in the rain forest.’

Deforestation in Brazil is a complex topic deeply entwined with the economics and politics of the region and exacerbated by climate change. The solution is not as simple as aiming to keep the rainforest untouched. My hope is that we humans learn to place more value on our green spaces and find sustainable ways to live and flourish together, as a planet.

I finally went foraging with and I’m so glad I did! We learned about what to eat (and what not to eat) out in the wild and even brought home some oyster mushrooms. This little guy isn’t edible but it sure is cute 🍄 (Thanks for the gift, !)

I learned recently that raw olives are too bitter to eat and have to be cured in brine, which can take months! They have a compound called oleuropein which makes them bitter and also has antimicrobial properties. Maybe that’s why some olive trees live to be thousands of years old?

The building across from me made national news when construction was halted upon finding a kestrel nest with five babies inside. It’s been fun to watch the fledglings leave the nest over the past couple of days! I’m so proud of Walt Gachuk and Snavely group for making sure the falcons were safe. They’re going to install a nesting box for them so that they can come back and nest in the years to come 🥰
