Update on Aurora Study Meeting:
At the meeting, people voted with sticker dots for which features they were most interested in. There is firm support from some special interest groups to reduce car traffic to one lane each direction. The representative from SDOT expressed a keen interest to hear from commuters! So please fill out the survey if you have not already done so. SDOT reports Aurora is “one of the highest traffic volume streets within the Seattle city limits”, carrying 32,000 vehicles a day. Even with two lanes of traffic for cars each direction there are backups certain times of day. One lane each direction would mean gridlock, commuters losing family time to a longer commute, and the potential for people to start cutting through the neighborhood streets to escape the gridlock. Not everyone lives and works close enough to transit option to bus there and not everyone is able-bodied enough to bike.

The last community meeting with SDOT for the Aurora redesign project is tonight from 6-7 at the Bitterlake Community Center!!! If you rely on Aurora for your commute, you have been left out of an important conversation until now! There is a strong push to reduce car traffic on Aurora to one lane each direction. If you have an opinion on that take the SDOT survey before April 5th even if you can't attend the meeting! Aurora from Fremont to 145th does need better sidewalks, better lighting and more crosswalks! There are currently NO crosswalks between 105th and 115th and other long stretches of the highway without adequate crosswalks. If you have marveled at the number of pedestrians jaywalking on Aurora, that may be why! There is also NO sidewalk for a stretch beside the cemetery on the west side just north of Fuzzy Buddy's.

We are sharing several conceptual ideas to help envision potential future improvements along Aurora Ave N and soliciting community feedback.

We want to hear from you! Your input is crucial to shaping the future of Aurora Ave N. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is conducting a survey to ask if our draft ideas incorporate your input and priorities for Aurora Ave N.

SDOT is looking for input on a redesign for Highway 99 between Fremont and 145th. Potential plans include reducing car traffic to one lane each direction and/or replacing turn lanes with planted medians or a center bus median. You may have an opinion on this. The meetings so far have been focused on neighborhood groups with no outreach to commuters who depend on Aurora every day as a highway. Community meetings are coming up and I encourage anyone who would be impacted by such changes to attend! SDOT's survey is also collecting input until April 5th.

The Aurora Ave N/State Route 99 corridor is one of the highest traffic volume streets within the Seattle city limits.
