Part 2: Certificate of Veterinary Inspection

Referred to as a Health Certificate this is the most common type of CVI and an important tool in preventing the spread of contagious diseases and viruses. A CVI is a federally controlled document that provides identification of the horse, proof that the horse has a current coggins, the horses destination and most importantly documentation that the horse has been examined by a Accredited Veterinarian within 30 days of travel and is free from evident disease or illness. A CVI is required to haul any horse across a state line in the United States and frequently they are required by specific facilities during competitions, etc. A CVI is valid for 30 days once issued and is considered to be “round trip” meaning to your destination and back home.

To get a CVI you will need to follow these steps:

1. Approximately 1-2 weeks prior to your travel date have your horse examined by an Accredited Veterinarian👨‍⚕️.

2. You will need to have the following information available:
📆 Date of Travel
📇 Name, Address and Phone Number of
the destination.
📇 Name, Address and Phone Number of
the person hauling the horse.
📄 A current coggins that has at least 30
days left before expiration.
📸 Left side, Right side and Face
photographs of the horse.

3. The CVI will be written and signed by the Accredited Veterinarian 10 days or less from your Date of Travel.

4. Print a copy of the CVI and your horses coggins and you will be ready to hit the road with your equne companion.

🦠BioSecurity During Travel🛻

Traveling for both recreation and competition is a great way to enjoy our equine companions. We’ve listed some helpful tips on keeping them safe while on the move.

🫧1.Keep a spray bottle of 10% bleach solution in your trailer and spray down all stall walls, doors, etc upon arrival. Let sit for a minimum 10 minutes before bedding and moving in your equine.

🚰2. Always bring your own water buckets and do not let your horse drink from any communal water tanks or buckets. Additionally bring your own hose or hose end and avoid placing it directly into your horses bucket, holding it above instead.

🐴3. When possible limit the amount of direct contact your horse can have with other unknown horses, such as through the bars of a stall or at a tie rail.

💉4. Before hitting the road consult with your Veterinarian about your equines vaccination status and if they may need any additional boosters.

🥕5. Whenever possible bring your own feed, hay and bedding to prevent any sudden dietary changes or allergen reactions.

🌡️6. Take your horses temperature daily when traveling and watch for any signs of illness such as nasal discharge, swollen glands or loose stool. Contact your Veterinarian at the first sign of any abnormalities.

Starting the day off with some conditioning. The Water Treadmill is a great option not only for recovery but also conditioning during these hot months.

🔥Summer Heat Relief Tip🔥

Did you know you can help cool your horses most effectively through cold hosing specific areas after a ride? By continually running cool water on your horses chest, girth and groin area where large vessels are located you can help lower your horses body temperature as the blood in those vessels is circulated throughout the body. If possible, cold hose your horse in a shaded area with fans aimed at them for quicker cooling.
