Here’s a morning dose of cuteness. Foster rat, Treasure, loves corn kernels. Look at his wee paws!

I've now had foster rat, Treasure, for 3.5 weeks. His courage has grown so much in that time! At first, all he did was hide in his igloo. Now, he is busy all over his cage, chews through boxes to get food, and walks up to me at an open cage door to earn treats.

In this video, you'll see how busy and joyful he was when transferred into a new and more enriched cage. Normally at this time of day, he'd be snoozing. But he was busy for over an hour checking everything out!

I plan to redesign his living quarters regularly to add interest to his routine.

Our other two shelter dogs who joined the training program at Buckingham Correctional Center are Chloe, a sharpei mix, and Sophia, a mountain cur mix.

Chloe is a confident and very social girl. She made sure to greet everyone and dole out kisses. Sophia is currently quite worried in the new environment. We're hoping she'll be able to settle in over the next few days so that she can remain with us and enjoy her time in the program. Please keep your fingers crossed for her!

I am so excited to be working with Service Dogs of Virginia, which has started a training program at Buckingham Correctional Center. Yesterday, four shelters dogs arrived at the prison and will stay with their handlers for a few months. This time will allow these newbie handlers to hone their training skills while the shelter dogs' adoptability is enhanced. Then the next round of dogs will be 6 mo. old service dog puppies!

Below are two of our wonderful shelter dogs: Larry ("splooted" in the grass) who entered prison like he'd arrived at the best party of his life, and North who is winning the hearts of everyone he meets. Both of these boys are about 9 months old and absolutely spectacular!

Introducing Treasure, aka T, my newest foster rat who arrived on 4/1. At first, he did nothing but hide in his igloo on the first floor of his cage. Now he's spending time up on the top shelf (even when I'm present!) and beginning to take food from me! He's actually moving along faster than Z did and I'm excited to see how he progresses.

Z Cool will now eat while in a box on my lap, indicating he's beginning to become more relaxed about this weird-for-him new activity.

Z Cool hangs out with me in a box on my lap every day. Being in the box is much less stressful than me holding him on my lap, at this time.

Occasionally, I'll pet him or scritch him behind his ears. I hope one day this will bring him real pleasure. In the next video, you'll see him eating in this context, which is a clear sign that he's relaxed.

This handsome hunk is 7 y.o. Tripper. I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time today. Can you believe that prior to this first training session, Tripper was very anti-crate, and had learned not to follow tossed treats inside because he knew it led to him being closed in. But in just a few minutes, he was CHOOSING to put himself in the crate in order to earn treats, rather than us using the food to try to lure him. Hilariously, we had a hard time getting him to leave the crate after this. Clever boy!!

Foster rattie, Z Cool, has been participating in some shaping exercises. He's learning to take some steps toward me in order to earn treats. Avocado is one of his favorites!
