Leptospirosis in Pets: What You Need to Know!
Leptospirosis is a serious zoonotic disease (meaning it can spread to humans) caused by bacteria found in water or soil contaminated with urine from infected animals—especially wildlife and rodents.
Dogs are most commonly affected. Symptoms can include:
• Fever
• Vomiting/diarrhea
• Lethargy
• Jaundice
• Kidney or liver damage
Cats are less commonly affected and usually show no symptoms, but they can still carry the bacteria.
How to protect your pets (and yourself):
• Vaccinate your dog—especially if they spend time outdoors or around water
• Avoid letting pets drink from puddles or lakes
• Control rodent populations
• Practice good hygiene when cleaning up pet urine
If your pet shows signs of illness, contact your vet immediately—early treatment can save lives!
