Over the last few days, we’ve received a lot of questions about how the ponies are doing and what we do during this freezing weather. When it’s really, really cold outside, lessons are canceled and we make changes to make the horses as comfy as we can.
🐴 More time indoors
When temperatures drop into the single digits or colder, our horses stay inside or have limited outside time. This helps protect them from extreme cold/wind, icy footing, and stiff muscles. Nothing is cuter than seeing them get back outside and kick up their heels after some time inside.
💧 Hydration matters (even in winter!)
Horses don’t always feel as thirsty in cold weather, so we add a little salt to their feed to encourage drinking and keep their systems working properly.
🌾 Happy, moving bellies
We add rice bran and warm water to their grain to keep bellies moving. This is important when horses are less active.
🏟️ Movement & play time
Even when it’s too cold to be outside, horses still need to move, even if they’re still in their blankets. They get hand-walked in the arena, time to stretch, and chances to play and interact, which helps muscles stay loose and digestion stay healthy. Caroline loves this the most!
🐱 Cora approves because these temps mean she spends as much time as she wants in the tack room or her heating pad.
Cold weather means more check-ins, extra blankets and more food. That’s Breezey’s favorite part. Winter care takes extra planning, but it’s all part of keeping our babies happy and healthy!🤍
