Schenectady Urban Farms

Schenectady Urban Farms Farmland is tended together with SiCM staff farmers overseeing healthy, organic practices and crop rotation year round. No experience is necessary!

Our mission is to farm nutrient-dense, fresh foods that feed our members & neighbors; to educate others in sustainable, replicable urban farming practices; and to develop connections that strengthen our community & promote food security in Schenectady. SiCM's Schenectady Urban Farms began in 2012 with the Vale Urban Farm and a mission to lower barriers to accessing fresh food, build community, and

green Schenectady. Three farms and a community orchard-over two acres of city growing space- now provide fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs, egg laying chickens, bees, and community composting to all participants of the farms. Members work a minimum of two hours/week on the farms in various capacities that fit their interests, and are able to get a share of the harvest. Additional food is grown for special community programs and any excess food is given to the SiCM Food Pantry and distributed there. Volunteers are welcomed to work and learn aspects of cimmunity urban farming.

🌱🌷🗑️ This past Friday, Schenectady Urban Farms participated in Schenectady’s 2nd Annual Trash Parade! We never seen downtown filled with so much creativity and community!

The Trash Parade is a creative community event aimed at repurposing recyclable materials and other waste products into puppets, costumes, masks, and banners to march in a procession in downtown Schenectady.

This event is created to raise awareness of repurposing waste materials, reusing what we already have before producing new goods and raise awareness on the effects of single use plastics on our environment. This years theme of “pollinators” aimed to communicate the importance of a healthy, balanced ecosystem, and how critical pollinators are to our food systems. 🦋🐝🐦

We’d like to give a special thanks to all the organizers who made this event possible, and to all of our amazing Schenectady Urban Farm members who were able to join us this year. We are looking forward to future trash parades and hope to see you all there next year! 🌱

A husband and wife team plans to turn a longtime Amsterdam diner into a farm store and cafe focused on affordable organic food. The couple said the former Tulio's Diner will become a farm store for their organic farm, a farm-to-table cafe and a certified kitchen for shelf-stable products.
