Structurally, the Student AVMA consists of an Executive Board and a House of Delegates (HOD) composed of two representatives from each member chapter. The House of Delegates meets twice yearly; in July during the AVMA Convention, and in the spring during the annual Student AVMA Educational Symposium. Members of the Executive Board are selected by the House of Delegates. They include the president,

president-elect, secretary, treasurer, international exchange officer, communications and public relations officer, editor-in-chief, global and public health officer, veterinary economics officer, and cultural outreach officer. The formation of a national organization of veterinary students has enabled what were once isolated student chapters to function effectively as a single unit on the national scene. The Student AVMA coordinates student chapter functions, promotes the exchange of ideas and information among students, and represents its members in matters that concern them, both as students and as future veterinarians.

Well-being is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Recognizing this, your SAVMA Delegates made history at the AVMA Convention in Denver, Colorado, by electing the very first Well-Being Officer, Megan Gulsby! With passion and dedication, she built this position from the ground up, ensuring that veterinary student wellness remains a priority nationwide.

"I am incredibly proud to have served as the first Well-Being Officer on the National SAVMA Executive Board. When I was elected, I saw this role as an opportunity to advocate for students at the national level and drive meaningful change. One of my biggest goals was to update the SAVMA Duty Hour Guidelines, recognizing the urgent need for administrations to better support clinical year students. My goal wasn’t necessarily for every school to adopt the guidelines—since each institution has its own structure and challenges—but rather to provide students and SAVMA chapters with a valuable reference tool. This document was designed to spark important conversations about wellness and empower students to advocate for change within their own institutions. While there is still work to be done, I am proud of the progress we have made in advancing wellness in veterinary education!" – Megan Gulsby

Let’s celebrate this incredible milestone and continue pushing for a healthier, more supportive future in veterinary medicine.
