And i reply with, "ABSOLUTELY!"
"Then what is so special about these 2 doing what they're supposed to be doing?" You ask me.

GREAT QUESTION!

These littles are about 5 1/2 wks old. Saturday when I was doing bum checks, I noticed 1 of the babies was skin & bones.
Why, I don't know. Heat related? Getting shoved out of the way by the others? I don't know.

Because of things going on, I couldn't take care of the baby like I should have/wanted to. Sometimes family needs to come first. So Sunday morning I started giving Critical Care. Completely forgetting 2 tried & true things I've done in the past that has saved a rabbit or two. I haven't dealt with babies or adults going off feed in a VERY long time!

I lost that baby on Monday. Too little, too late? I don't know. I still don't know what or why. But I learned & remembered. And it's ok.

I found 2 more, in the same litter that are skin & bones now as well. And 2 of my Sr bucks went off feed. Im the hottest part of summer. This is what makes me think it could be heat related?

2 things I remembered.
1. If rabbits don't drink, they don't eat. They need to be hydrated more than fed.
2. Rabbits NEED cecotropes. These are the grape-like p**p clusters that they eat directly from the source, or will sometimes be laying on the wire, drop pan or litterbox. They need the cecotropes to aid digestion. To help keep their gut bacteria in check. If the bacteria in their gut gets out of balance, they will go off feed. So, if they're not eating, they're not getting cecotropes. It becomes a cycle.

So for rabbits that go off feed, one of the quickest ways to get them eating again is giving them cecotropes from another rabbit. They have to be fresh, shiny. Not hard & dried up. I put them in an empty medicine bottle (perfect size!) And add water. Shake, mix, etc & syring feed it to them. Usually 3 mL. I then give them Lactated Ringer solution SubQ as a quick hydration. It depends on how long the rabbit has been off feed. Sometimes it takes about 24 hrs. Sometimes more or less.

These babies, I pulled from mom & siblings on Monday so I could monitor them specifically. I need to be able to make sure they are eating & drinking. That they are peeing & p**ping. They are starting to nibble hay & drink water! They are far from out of the woods yet, but I have hope!

The 2 Sr bucks are also doing well. The one is drinking & eating normally again. His p**p tray is looking back to normal. The other, is working his way back. He is finally starting to p**p again. Meaning his gut is starting to move & he is starting to eat again! But his p**p is still little & not as much as when healthy. So he is being carefully monitored.

This is the life of a breeder. It is not always flowers & sunshine. There is loss & days of "playing" (digging) in p**p (and feeding it to the animals). There is late nights, & early mornings. Times when you worry & stress. And even doing all you can & think of to do, you can still lose. But you still turn around & keep trying. And you would choose to do it all again bc the rewards far outweigh the heartaches & heartbreaks.

Full moon affects more than just us humans! 🫣🤦‍♀️

Went out to feed the rabbits. Caught movement out of the corner of my eye. He almost gave me a heart attack! At first thought he was a mouse! But, no. This poor little baby was sitting on the concrete, shivering. Scared. Only a week old, still blind & somehow got out of his nestbox. Somehow crawled out of his cage, fell to the floor & crawled around till I found him. I'm SO GLAD I DID! There's so many places he could have found himself that I'd not have found him!

Lord, have mercy on my poor heart! 😮‍💨🙏

What a fun show today! I got to show with a fun group of fellow breeders!
Rabbit Hollow's Cypress picked up 2 legs (for a total of 3!) at the NCRBA show in Gaithersburg Md today!
