I love this compounded suppliment!!

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a naturally occurring fatty acid compound that’s produced in the body and also found in plants and animals.

PEA has been researched for decades for its role in supporting normal inflammatory responses, nervous system health, immune balance, mobility, skin health, and overall wellness.

Great info regarding Addisons disease...

🚨 ADDISON’S DISEASE IN DOGS: THE “GREAT PRETENDER” 🚨

Have you ever heard of Addison’s disease?
It is one of the most commonly missed endocrine disorders in dogs because the symptoms often mimic MANY other illnesses. Dogs may seem “off” for months before diagnosis.

Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) occurs when the adrenal glands fail to produce enough essential hormones, primarily cortisol and aldosterone. These hormones are critical for stress response, electrolyte balance, blood pressure regulation, hydration, and energy metabolism.

⚠️ Without treatment, Addison’s can become life-threatening.

---
WHAT CAUSES ADDISON’S DISEASE❓️

Most canine Addison’s cases are believed to be immune-mediated, meaning the immune system attacks the adrenal glands. Less common causes include:

▪️ Adrenal gland damage
▪️ Certain medications (such as trilostane or mitotane)
▪️ Adrenal hemorrhage
▪️ Cancer infiltration
▪️ Pituitary dysfunction (secondary Addison’s)

---
COMMON SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

The tricky part? Symptoms often wax and wane.

Dogs may experience:
✔️ Intermittent vomiting or diarrhea
✔️ Weight loss
✔️ Poor appetite
✔️ Lethargy
✔️ Weakness
✔️ Shaking or trembling
✔️ Increased drinking
✔️ Dehydration
✔️ Slow heart rate
✔️ Stress intolerance
✔️ Collapse during an “Addisonian crisis”

Because symptoms can appear gastrointestinal, neurologic, or musculoskeletal, Addison’s is often called “the great imitator.”

---
BREEDS WITH HIGHER RISK

Although ANY dog can develop Addison’s disease, predisposed breeds include:

🔹️ Standard Poodles
🔹️ Portuguese Water Dogs
🔹️ Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers
🔹️ Great Danes
🔹️ Bearded Collies
🔹️ West Highland White Terriers
🔹️ Labrador Retrievers
🔹️ Rottweilers
🔹️ Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

Females appear to be affected more frequently.

---
HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED❓️

Diagnosis typically involves:

✅️ Blood chemistry and electrolyte testing
✅️ Cortisol screening
✅️ ACTH stimulation testing (gold standard)

Classic Addison’s often presents with:
⬇️ low sodium
⬆️ high potassium

However, “atypical Addison’s” may initially show normal electrolytes, which can delay diagnosis.

---
TREATMENT
Treatment is usually VERY successful.
Most dogs require lifelong hormone replacement therapy using medications such as:

▪️ DOCP injections (Percorten-V or Zycortal)
▪️ Fludrocortisone
▪️ Prednisone/prednisolone

Dogs in an Addisonian crisis require emergency veterinary care, IV fluids, and rapid steroid support.

The encouraging news❓️
With proper treatment and monitoring, most dogs can live long, happy, active lives.

---
THE ROLE OF NUTRITION & NATURAL SUPPORT

Nutrition CANNOT cure Addison’s disease, and dogs should NEVER have prescribed medications replaced with “natural alternatives.” Hormone replacement is essential.

However, nutrition and lifestyle support CAN help reduce physiologic stress and support overall resilience.

SUPPORTIVE STRATEGIES MAY INCLUDE:

🥩 Fresh, Minimally Processed Nutrition:
A balanced fresh food diet helps to support gut health, immune regulation, and overall metabolic function. Ultra-processed diets may contribute to inflammatory burden in some dogs.

⚖️ Balanced Sodium Intake
Because aldosterone regulates sodium balance, some Addisonian dogs may require careful sodium management under veterinary guidance. This should NEVER be done blindly or excessively.

🦠 Gut Health Support
Chronic GI upset is common in Addisonian dogs. Supporting microbiome health with species-appropriate fiber and carefully selected probiotics may be beneficial for some individuals.

🐟 Omega-3 Fatty Acids
EPA and DHA helps modulate inflammation and support immune health. Always pair with Vitamin E to prevent lipid peroxidation.

😌 Stress Reduction
Physical and emotional stress can increase glucocorticoid demand. Stable routines, adequate sleep, gentle exercise, enrichment, and minimizing unnecessary stressors can be extremely helpful.

💧 Hydration Support
Maintaining hydration is critical, especially during illness, heat exposure, or periods of stress.

🩺 Monitoring Matters
Routine electrolyte testing and medication adjustments are essential. Even stable dogs can require dosage changes over time.

📌
Addison’s disease is serious, but it is manageable.

Many dogs suffer for months before diagnosis because symptoms are vague and intermittent. If your dog has recurring GI upset, unexplained lethargy, weakness, or “mystery illness” episodes, Addison’s deserves consideration.

With proper veterinary care, appropriate hormone replacement, stress management, and supportive nutrition, many Addisonian dogs go on to thrive for years. ❤️
