🦃 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips 🐾

As the holiday approaches, we want to make sure all our amazing clients are informed!
As a vet tech with over 10 years of experience, I’ve learned a thing or two along the way 🩺🐈‍⬛💛

Here are some helpful, easy-to-read tips to keep your pets safe this Thanksgiving:

🚫 Skip These:
• Turkey bones & skin (pancreatitis risk!)
• Stuffing, gravy, onions, and garlic
• Chocolate, grapes/raisins, and xylitol
• Raw dough or batter

✅ Safe Treat Swaps:
• Plain turkey breast (no seasoning)
• Mashed sweet potato, green beans, or pumpkin
• Frozen pumpkin + yogurt “pupsicles”

🏡 Keep Calm & Cozy:
• Secure the trash (temptation is real)
• Watch the door with guests coming and going
• Create a quiet zone if your pet gets overwhelmed
• Candles + curious whiskers = chaos waiting to happen

💡 Pro Tip:
Save your local 24hr vet number in your phone before dinner starts & if your pet requires medication for anxiety, it might be a good idea to pick some up, just in case.

Last week we had to have immediate surgery performed on RC as his mouth was affecting his upper respiratory function. There was abscess and infection throughout his mouth and without surgery, his life would have been in jeopardy. The two and a half hour surgery resulted in the loss of 22 teeth but also provided him with a new lease on life with the ability to breathe normally and freed him of his horrible mouth pain.

Now we need to pay for the surgery performed and we have to raise $1,500.00 so we can continue to schedule other desperately needed surgeries, medical appointments, spay and neuters for other dogs we have rescued. Found some kittens outdoors? Is their mother nowhere to be found? Unless if they're sick or injured, it's best to just leave them be for a while!

It's easy to assume that, if the kittens are left by themselves, that their mother has abandoned them. This is not the case most of the time, however. More than likely, the mother has either left to find food or even try to find a new place to keep her kittens safe. Sometimes, the presence of humans or loud noises can startle the mother, bringing her into hiding until the coast is clear.

Before trying to bring them somewhere, give the mother a timeframe of 10-12 hours to see if she will return to her babies. If she returns, great! They're in good hands. If not, it may be best to contact a local rescue/shelter about finding fosters for the little ones. If you notice, however, that these kittens look ill or have any injuries, contact a facility that can provide medical care (like a vet - or us!) to see if they can take them in for exams and treatment.
