It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news that Kayu passed away on the evening of March 6th.

For 20 wonderful years, Kayu was more than just a bird in the store—he was a personality, a companion, and a friend to so many. He loved being around people and had quite the vocabulary to prove it. From his cheerful “Pretty Bird/Boy” and curious “Watch-a-doings,” to the sweet “Love Yous” and all the “Uck Yous,” Kayu kept everyone smiling. People often swore they heard him say all kinds of other things too, and he never failed to brighten someone’s day with his chatter.

I truly hope he’s flying high now and reuniting with some of his old friends who passed before him. Jon, who Kayu loved riding on the shoulder with and going on car rides. And Mike—Kayu’s beloved “nut man”—who always seemed to have a little baggie of walnuts in his pocket just for the birds.

I also like to imagine he’s chatting again with Norm, Mike’s Indian Ringneck. The two of them had such a funny friendship, talking back and forth and occasionally giving each other playful tail pulls.

Kayu touched a lot of lives over the years. Thank you to everyone who took the time to talk with him, laugh with him, and become his friend. He truly loved the attention and the company.

The store will feel much quieter now without his voice and personality filling the room, but he will always be remembered with love.

**URGENT** We are looking for new rural homes with shelter and food for a colony of cats that are losing their home. The barn they have called home for years is being torn down soon. They will need to be contained for a couple of weeks to get accumulated to their new surroundings. Most are on the feral side. They'll be vaccinated and fixed before going to their new homes. We will also supply a large bag of food and some wet food to get them started. If you or someone you know is able to open their property to a couple of kitties, please contact us either by messenger, 608-643-2234, or stop in Animal House.
