Originally adopted from us as a kitten, Dior found herself back in our care 6 years later when her owner unexpectedly passed away. As if that isn’t upsetting enough on its own, various other circumstances surrounding the event made this an incredibly traumatic experience for Dior. Thankfully, a caring neighbor made sure that she found her way back to us at SAS.
Not surprisingly, she was very nervous and unsocial as a result of what she had been through. Hiding, hissing and not wanting anything to do with people, we made her area as comfortable as we could, and cared for her without expectation of contact.
It would be weeks, months even, before the slightest hint that Dior wanted more. Staying near as we cleaned around her, accepting placed treat offerings, and eventually accepting the slightest of pets.
A volunteer with a particular interest in her, offered to foster her to see if she could get any further in her socialization.
So, for the last few months, Dior has been in a home, in her own room, relearning how simple life can be for a cat and how to enjoy it.
What we have learned is that Dior is suited to a slow paced life filled with comfy nap spots, a good lookout window and humans that enjoy sitting still to curl up next to.
Despite still being on her journey of learning to trust, she has come a long way, and we believe she is ready to take that next step: find a forever home.
In a permanent environment, Dior will have the opportunity to get to know her family and settle into the version of herself that she deserves to be.
Kindness, patience and understanding will be the key to unlocking her full potential as a furever companion.
A word from Dior’s foster mom:
After 5 months in the Shelter and almost 4 months in foster care, Dior has
reopened herself up to the world around her and her true self is shining brightly. Although she’s still hesitant around new people, once she knows that you’re safe and friendly, she is affectionate, playful and expresses her gratitude for the love coming her way. Dior is ready to be adopted into her forever home. If you are someone who is looking for an adult cat, are willing to allow her the patience she needs while she acclimates to her new space and people, and have a calm home, Dior is the cat for you. She is affectionate and playful, yet also values her alone time while she watches birds, squirrels and people from a window perch, basks in the sun and plays with her catnip toys. Dior has spent enough time in shelter care and is ready to go home!
