If you've recently brought home a puppy, there's one thing we want every new puppy parent to know: the first 16 weeks of your puppy's life are the single most important window for shaping who they become.

This is called the socialization period and what happens during this time has a lasting impact on your dog's behavior, confidence, and comfort around the world.

Here's what to focus on:

🐾 People — Introduce your puppy to people of different ages, appearances, and energy levels in a calm, positive way 🐕 Other animals — Controlled, positive interactions with vaccinated dogs help build healthy social skills 🔊 Sounds & environments — Traffic, kids, stairs, car rides — gradual exposure now prevents fear responses later 🏥 The vet — Early positive visits (even just for a weight check and treats!) build a foundation of trust

One important note: socialization doesn't mean overwhelming your puppy. It means thoughtful, positive exposure at their pace.

Not sure where to start? Ask us at your puppy's first visit — we'll help you build a socialization plan that fits their personality and vaccine schedule. 🐾

Every great health outcome starts with a wellness exam.

At Riverside Pet Care, our comprehensive wellness visits aren't just a quick once-over. They're a full-picture look at your pet's health — from nose to tail.

Here's what we assess during every exam:

🐾 Weight, body condition, and nutrition 🦷 Oral health and signs of dental disease ❤️ Heart and lung function 👁️ Eyes, ears, and skin 🦴 Joint health and mobility 🔬 Parasite screening and prevention needs

We also take time to talk with you — about what you're noticing at home, any behavioral changes, and what's coming up in your pet's life stage.

Wellness exams are how we catch small things before they become big problems. And for pets who can't tell us when something hurts, that proactive check-in matters more than most people realize.

We are so excited to announce a new doctor joining us this July!

Dr. Julia Al-Maksosi grew up in New Hampshire, but she always longed to explore the rest of the country. Her deep rooted love for all animals and her passion for medicine was seeded early in her childhood, having spent much time watching medical shows with her mom and caring for several species of pets as she grew, including cats, dogs, sugar gliders, guinea pigs, hamsters, and fish. Prior to veterinary school, Dr. Al-Maksosi ran her own small, dog grooming business, worked as a kennel attendant at a boarding & daycare facility, and worked as a veterinary technician at a small animal general practice, all while back east.

Dr. Al-Maksosi earned her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science through the University of Connecticut in 2022. She graduated with her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine through Washington State University in 2026, having spent the first 2 years of her program at Utah State University. Her special areas of interest include canine reproduction, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry. She also loves horses and is interested in horse reproductive medicine. Dr. Al-Maksosi strives to use a fear-free approach with her patients and develop trustworthy, life-long relationships with their families.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Al-Maksosi enjoys weightlifting, spending time outdoors, reading, playing video games, and caring for her aquarium. She especially values quality time with her husband, Ceiph, and their two cats, Osiris and Daphne. In the years ahead, she hopes to continue expanding her knowledge through PennHIP, Fear Free, and acupuncture certifications while also looking forward to starting a family and someday raising a dachshund puppy of her own.

Can dogs and cats eat the same food?

Short answer: No.

Here's what pet owners get wrong about nutrition:

Cats are obligate carnivores. They need specific nutrients like taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A that only come from animal sources. Dog food doesn't provide these in the right amounts.

Dogs are omnivores. They can handle more variety in their diet, but that doesn't mean cat food is good for them either. Cat food is too high in protein and fat for most dogs, which can lead to obesity and pancreatitis over time.

Feeding the wrong food occasionally won't cause immediate harm, but making it a habit can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies or health problems.

What should you feed your pet?

Species-appropriate, life-stage-specific food. Puppy, adult, and senior pets all have different nutritional needs. So do dogs vs. cats.

Not sure what's best for your pet? We can help. Nutrition is a huge part of preventive care, and we're happy to talk through options during your next visit.

Your pet's long-term health starts with what's in their bowl.

Warmer weather means more time outdoors and more exposure to ticks. 🌿🐾

Lyme disease is transmitted through tick bites and can lead to joint pain, fever, and long-term complications if left untreated.

Preventive care is key, including tick prevention, routine screenings, and early intervention when needed.

If your pet spends time outside, now is the time to make sure they’re protected.

Thinking about breeding your dog? Here's what responsible breeders do before the first heat cycle:

✓ Health screenings for genetic conditions
joint dysplasia, eye disorders, and breed-specific conditions should be ruled out before breeding. This protects the puppies and preserves the integrity of the breed.

✓ Reproductive health assessment
We evaluate your dog's overall health, confirm they're a good candidate for breeding, and create a timeline that prioritizes their wellbeing.

✓ Pre-breeding vaccinations and parasite control
Mom's immunity protects her puppies in those critical early weeks. We make sure she's fully protected before conception.

✓ Progesterone testing and timing
Precise timing means healthier pregnancies and better outcomes. We use progesterone testing to identify the optimal breeding window.

Breeding isn't just about producing puppies—it's about doing it responsibly, safely, and with the long-term health of both mom and puppies in mind.

Our canine reproduction services include pre-breeding consultations, progesterone testing, pregnancy monitoring, and whelping support.

If you're a breeder or considering it, let's talk. We're here to support you every step of the way.
