We have an updated video on our YouTube channel showing the damage to our fruit trees from the recent cold temperatures. Our farm hit 25° at ground level.

The trees in with our chickens handled the weather much better thanks to the protection of two buildings and a massive live oak tree. The mangos and jackfruits in this area are untouched. The caimitos, starfruit, sapodillas, dwarf Fiji coconut, Inga edulis, and guanabana trees are still very green as well.

My planting strategy will be different moving forward. It is too exhausting to continue to replant so often between hurricanes and cold snaps. I really enjoy change, but admit I am frustrated not being able to do as much as I would like due to healing from a tibia stress fracture. Grateful for help from my family and to be walking better each day💕

You can see the damage to fruit trees not planted under the oaks at the link below.

My paver garden with many of my favorite plants had become so overgrown. Brooke removed every unwanted plant, repaired the pavers, and is beginning to remulch the area.

No one weeds better than Brooke, and all while attending graduate school. She knows what every plant is and never removes an intentional planting, which was quite challenging with how weedy and overgrown the area was before starting.

Thank you Brooke🌺

Hoping for a good mango season, despite the early blooms. For our location, I prefer for mangos to start blooming later to lessen issues with powdery mildew. So far, all is looking good. Nam Doc Mai in the foreground and Po Pyu Kalay in the background.

The squirrels still haven’t found our Dana White macadamia nuts. I have started harvesting some off the tree green instead of letting them fall, and they are drying nicely within a couple of days inside.

Avocados from our Day and Hass avocado trees. Day normally ripens much earlier. I think the late ripening was due to limited irrigation in the trees.
Avocado trees will not do well in areas that flood, but they do like a good about of water, with excellent drainage.
I have grafted Day, Thompson Red, Hawaiian Red, Pura Vida, and Victoria avocado trees available for purchase in Sarasota. Any avocado tree purchased today or tomorrow will include a free Day avocado🥑.

Craig grafted these citrus trees in the 1990s, before our four daughters were born. Our girls loved picking from the trees when they were little.
The new owner has allowed us to visit and pick from the trees over the years. There is a Hamlin, Navel, and several Satsuma trees on the property (along with figs and many loquats). All trees have been naturally grown for around three decades.
🍊🌳Thank you Lauren 🌳🍊

This is a great time of year to gift yourself, a friend, or loved one a fruit tree, that will produce fruit for decades to come. We have a large variety of wonderful fruit trees available at our nursery in Sarasota, Florida.

If you live in Sarasota County, applications are open for storm water mitigation projects for home owners. These include down spout gardens, rain gardens, bioswales, and other projects. The picture is part of the last project we completed which includes two rain gardens, bioswales, and a pond. This is a great way to receive financial help in adding native plants to your property along with projects to help prevent flooding and runoff.

Sarasota County is accepting Raincheck applications Oct. 1 through June 1💧

If you’ve been considering outfitting your home with projects that improve water quality and increase stormwater filtration, now is the time! Small-scale, easy, DIY projects, like rain gardens and downspout planters, increase water absorption and offer natural filtration, while also creating a beautiful new habitat that you can enjoy. The best part? Sarasota County offers a rebate for installing these projects!

Pictured below is a recent RainCheck project. The applicant constructed a bioswale, which helps filter stormwater and slow the velocity of water as it flows, giving it a chance to naturally percolate into the ground instead of rushing into drains.

Visit scgov.net/raincheck for more information.
