An excerpt from our workshop on aversive control of behavior. Snug has had to work through difficulties in a couple of different areas in his training, including some stressful work on his “hold” for the retrieve, and some ecollar work to finish his recall. This video shows clearly that his enthusiasm for training has been in no way diminished, and our relationship is solid. Short term fallout, or stress, doesn’t mean long term damage.
You can see his entire progression in our membership service under the Snug Chronicles.

Entering a weekend in which we intend to discuss aversive control of behavior, I think it’s wise to revisit the idea that not all behavior is a conscious choice on the part of the dog. If we are going to use negative reinforcement and positive punishment properly, and with minimal fallout, we need to remind ourselves of the infinite ways in which Pavlovian processes drive behavior. Punishment works when the dog knows what to do to avoid it, AND they are capable of doing so…physically, emotionally, and intellectually (cognitively).

An excerpt from our recent Behavior Modification seminar in Melbourne, Australia. Which behaviors are problems and which are just “normal” dog behavior in the wrong environment. The entire seminar, and lots of other content, are available in our membership service. Visit our website for details.
