Toast x Marielle

Toast, 5, came into Marielle’s life during COVID, when he was only 11 weeks old. At first, she was all, “what have I done,” mostly because she didn’t change clothes for his first five days at home. But Toast, with his sweet, curious, and coy personality, quickly had her heart melting, especially after she was finally able to take a shower.

These days, the two are inseparable, with a bond unlike anything Marielle has ever known. “Toast is my first pet as an adult, and he’s the absolute best part of every day,” she says. “He has captured the heart of my whole family and all my friends with his joyful exuberance…he comes everywhere with me, but even when he’s not around, he’s often the center of our conversations.”

From leisurely early morning sniffaris to long stretches of snuggles on the couch to warm, sunny afternoons spent at the park, Marielle can’t remember her life before Toast, and she doesn’t want to. He’s the best thing to ever happen to her.

This week, two DOG PPL members lost their 2-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, Dunkin, while he was in the care of a board-and-train program called Smart Dogs Training Academy in Studio City.

He was family. And part of ours.

The Fedyk family learned Dunkin suffered from heat exhaustion while in the trainer’s care and was not taken to a veterinarian.

An investigation is now underway.
Since his story became public, other families have come forward with serious allegations of their own.

California has standards for pet boarding facilities, and many kennels and daycares require local permits.
But oversight varies by jurisdiction, and routine inspections aren’t guaranteed everywhere.

Meanwhile, there is still no statewide professional license or mandatory certification required to call yourself a dog trainer.

There are gaps in the system.

As a community, we need to look deeper. Verify credentials. Tour the facility. Ask questions.

Because protecting our dogs shouldn’t require learning these questions after something goes wrong.

For Dunkin. And for every dog entrusted to someone else’s care.
