🐾 What is a Gastropexy and Why is it Important for Dogs? 🐾

Did you know that large and deep-chested dogs (like Great Danes, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, and German Shepherds) are at higher risk for a life-threatening emergency called Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), often known as “bloat”?

👉 What happens?
The stomach fills with gas and can twist, cutting off blood supply. Without immediate emergency surgery, GDV can be fatal.

👉 How can we help prevent it?
A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that tacks the stomach to the abdominal wall, preventing it from twisting. It does not stop the stomach from filling with gas, but it can prevent the deadly rotation.

👉 When is it done?
• Often performed at the same time as a spay or neuter in at-risk breeds.
• Can also be scheduled as a stand-alone preventive surgery.

💡 Why consider it?
• Peace of mind for pet parents of at-risk dogs.
• Life-saving in preventing GDV.
• Minimally invasive options (laparoscopic gastropexy) are available at many clinics.

🐶❤️ If you have a large or deep-chested dog, talk to your veterinarian about whether gastropexy is right for your pet.

Our house cat, Garbage, heard Dr. Ron’s cat making unpleasant noises because he didn’t want an injection. Garbage sneaks up behind our technician and, in defense of Chester (Dr. Ron’s personal cat), smacks our technician’s behind!!!
