The x-ray on the left is of a foxtail tract that was injected with contrast medium to show just how far a foxtail can travel. The lesion between the toes of the foot on the bottom right is how these tracts will look to the naked eye. This is a great example of just how far foxtails can migrate in tissues. Thank you to Dr. Andrew Grange from Veterinary Surgical Centers in Berkeley for this amazing x-ray.

7 Ways Not To Die From A Rattlesnake Bite

Wherever you roam, your chances of a potentially dangerous rattlesnake encounter are small. The serpents are shy by nature and do their best to avoid humans. But two unnerving close calls seared this fact into my brain: A chance meeting with a rattler can happen when you least expect it, no matter h...

Warm weather brings out snakes, at least it did in SCV today. Detective Dorman said that while he was patrolling in Castaic, he was alerted to a rattlesnake (pictured below). Dorman was able to safely relocate the snake to an area far away from homes. Just like people, snakes like to come out of their cool weather hiding places to take advantage of the warm weather. It’s just something you may want to keep in mind if you hit the hiking trails.

SNAKE SAFETY

The rattlesnake pictured was spotted this week by a woman walking on a sidewalk on The Old Road (between McBean Pkwy x Valencia Blvd).

You don't have to be hiking on trails to encounter a rattlesnake.
Most bites occur between the months of April - October. Rattlesnakes may roam at any time of the day or night. If walking at night, be sure to use a flashlight.

-Avoid tall grass, weeds and heavy underbrush where snakes may hide during the day.
-Look at your feet to watch where you step.
-Remember rattlesnakes do not always rattle before they strike!

First Aid DO's and DON'TS
If bitten by a rattlesnake DO NOT:
1.Do not restrict blood flow by applying a tourniquet.
2.Do not ice the wound.
3.Do not suck the poison out with your mouth.
These methods can very well cause additional harm and most amputations or other serious results of a rattlesnake bite are a result of icing or applying a tourniquet.

DO
Do Stay calm
Do CALL 9-1-1
Do Wash the bite area gently with soap and water if available
Do Lay or sit down with the bite below the level of the heart.
Do Keep still and calm. This can slow down the spread of venom.
Transport safely to the nearest medical facility immediately.

General information

Rattlesnakes are a fact of life throughout California. With heavy rains this year, there’s alot of food for the Rats, Mice and other little varmints, perfect food source for Rattlesnakes. With the mild weather that we have in Southern California, rattlesnakes don’t hybernate very long. As the weather warms, it only takes a few days of 65 to 70 degrees weather to bring the snakes out. If a rattlesnake should cross your path, you'll want your dog to alert you without danger to either you or your pet. Snake Avoidance Clinics are safe & humane way to teach your pet to stay away from snakes. Our Snake Avoidance Clinic is conducted by professional herpetologist & QUWF member Robert Kettle.
