Everyone knows that ache.đź’›
Let's make it a little bit easier on you both.
Apart from the food and medicine, what do they need to help them through?
Familiar items help.
Right now, they don't need a new rug or blanket that doesn't smell like home.
If you haven't washed their favourite toy or bed for a while does it really need one right now?
Familiar scents are enormously comforting to your wee buddy, they smell like them, they smell like you and the home they know and love.
All of this helps them.
Don't feel that where they are going will judge you for your dogs hairy, bit smelly, torn mat/toy/bed.
This is about making your beloved dog as comfortable as possible. No apologies needed for that, at all.
Essential food and medications.
If you can’t get back on time and someone else needs to collect them, or they need to stay longer than expected, they must have enough supplies.
No one wants to scramble for the exact food your dog is on, or chase a prescription when shops and vets are closed for the holiday.
What does the caregiver really need to know?
Don't hold back here.
Label those notes with your dogs preferences and list those non negotiables.
If you know in your heart they cannot be off lead without you, say it.
Be firm, be clear, and explain why. Safety comes first, emotional and physical.
What does an escalation look like for your dog?
What are the early signs they need a break?
How does your dog show they are stressed?
How does your dog show they don't want to interact?
These details matter.
A bit of preparation helps everything and it'll give you comfort that you've given your wee friend everything they may need.
