We know you’re so excited to go on some autumn nature walks with your dog, but for this #FallSafetyTip, make sure you watch out for snakes, some of which can be venomous! They’re preparing for hibernation and may be a little crankier if disturbed by a curious pet! 🐍
When walking or hiking, if something happens to your pet, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. #VCApets
Is your cat more trick or treat? 😸#VCApets
It’s almost #Halloween, so this #FallSafetyTip is all about pumpkins 🎃! Although plain, baked pumpkin can have nutritional benefits for your dog, the stem, skin, pulp and raw seeds are all dangerous for them to eat. When in doubt, stick to dog food or contact your veterinarian. #VCApets

Today doesn’t just mark the first day of August, it’s also the start of Dogust, the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs! This wholesome holiday marks an honorary birthday for adopted shelter dogs, as their exact ones are often unknown.

Reports of toxic pet exposures to blue green algae have increased of late, so here's what you need to know for diagnosis and treatment.
I had to bring my little buddy to work this morning to have some weird welts on his side checked out. Even after working in vet med for years, I still get anxious when my pets get sick and are in the hospital. It's a good reminder for me of how our clients are feeling every time they come in, and of how important it is to be patient and compassionate with them.

Like everyone else, we get tons of junk mail, and pretty much all of it ends up in the recycling bin. Fortunately for us, though, sometimes our junk mail has adorable pictures of costumed chinchillas for our amusement. 😜

Goober (A462838)
Goober (A462838) is a 4-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei looking for a home for the holidays. Goober has been at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA since July! We think he’s been getting overlooked in the kennels. This past weekend he went home with a foster family to get some comfy couch time. He was a very well-behaved boy who liked to follow his Foster around the house and sit right by her side. He gave tons of kisses and slept peacefully at the foot of the bed at night. Goober is now back at PHS looking for a new friend who would like to give him a furrever home.
The adoption fee for dogs is $130. All dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before going to their new home.
New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet.
View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org. Adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.
We had a very sweet patient last Thursday who was referred here by his regular vet because they were concerned he might have eaten something string-like. We even have a special name for this ("linear foreign body"), and we treat them with special concern. Strings and string-like items have a nasty tendency to work their way through a pet's GI tract and then get caught on one end. The intestines will continue to move and try to pass the string, but since it's stuck, they often pull themselves into a horrible twisted mess that is very hard to fix. In our patient's case, Dr. Bowman (from our internal medicine department) was able to perform an abdominal ultrasound [bottom left] and her findings convinced Dr. Wayne, the ER vet on shift, that the patient needed surgery. Dr. Wayne was able to remove the foreign body, which proved to be a piece of packing tape [bottom right], and the patient went home 48 hours later. We are all very happy things have gone well, and very grateful to our client for allowing us to share this story.

Here are some pictures of a patient we saw recently! Move through them clockwise, starting from the upper right, to follow his story. He came in with a badly fractured pelvis (see picture 2)- we're not currently able to repair such fractures in our hospital, so he was referred to VCA Veterinary Specialists of the Valley in Woodland Hills for surgery. The fractures were pinned and plated, and the incisions were closed with surgical staples (picture 3). In picture 4, he still has bandages covering his surgical incisions, but those have since been removed and he is recovering well at home 😻 [📸: Dazzie]

Contagious disease alert! Call or visit your regular veterinarian if you're not sure whether your dogs are current, and come see us if you're worried your dog might be sick. Parvovirus most commonly affects puppies, but we very recently saw an adult dog with parvo, so keep an eye on your canine companions!

PUPPY DAY We hardly EVER get to see healthy puppies here because we only treat pets with health problems, so this was a huge special treat for us. Dr. Lanuza, our ophthalmologist, was screening them for signs of congenital (inherited) eye diseases before the puppies go to their new homes.
If you're interested in learning more about how pets are evaluated for such things, look up the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals).
