🥹 We would like to take a moment to slow down and appreciate our staff and our community in our efforts in rehoming homeless pets.

🐾 Animal welfare can be a very rewarding and very heartbreaking profession. When a donation is received with this wonderful letter, it is a pleasant reminder that what we do MATTERS.

🙌 Thank you to all of our supporters for choosing adoption, opening your home to foster pets, donating supplies, and sharing the animals in our care far and wide.

💥The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention graphics below are good educational tools to learn about the Rabies Virus and how to keep you, your family, and your pets safe. ALWAYS avoid wildlife and ALWAYS call your local Animal Control if you suspect you have been exposed to a rabid animal.

‼️Remember, ALL cats, dogs and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies at 16 weeks of age, and kept up to date for that pet's life. This is a state law- NC general statute 130A-185.

😺Lee County residents are welcome to schedule an appointment with the shelter for a one year vaccine for their pet by calling (919) 776-7446 option 2. The Lee County Animal Shelter also holds one-year rabies clinics once a month that is open to all. Cost is $10 per animal.

During this time the Lee County Animal Control division is not picking up stray dogs. The shelter is implementing the proper protocols for eradicating Parvovirus from the facility and therefore cannot house canines during this shut down.

The Lee County Health Department has reported confirmed cases of parvovirus at the Lee County Animal Shelter, which has caused Animal Services to suspend intake of any new canines at the shelter through May 15, 2025.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious, but preventable, illness affecting canines which may cause vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. Vaccines, including the parvo vaccine, are essential for keeping pets safe and healthy, and are strongly recommended.

After consulting with the County’s veterinarian, Animal Services has begun implementing the necessary protocols and procedures for disinfecting the facility.

There is no risk to humans from parvovirus.

During this time, the shelter will continue to accept and adopt felines from the facility.

For more information, please contact Animal Services at 919-776-7446.

🐾 Dog Bite Safety Tips! 🐾

Did you know that over 4.5 million dog bites occur in the U.S. each year? While most dogs are friendly, it's important to know how to stay safe around them. Here are some essential tips to help prevent dog bites and keep both you and your furry friends safe:

1️⃣ Ask Before Petting: Always ask the dog's owner for permission before petting, especially if the dog seems nervous or is unfamiliar to you.

2️⃣ Respect Their Space: Avoid getting too close to a dog when it’s eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies. Dogs can be protective of their space!

3️⃣ Stay Calm: If you encounter a dog that seems aggressive, stay calm. Avoid eye contact and slowly back away without turning your back.

4️⃣ Teach Kids Proper Behavior: Teach children to never approach or disturb a dog they don't know, and to avoid sudden movements that may startle the animal.

5️⃣ Body Language Matters: Dogs communicate through their body language. If a dog is wagging its tail but also showing tense muscles or growling, it may be signaling discomfort or aggression.

6️⃣ Don’t Run: Running away from a dog can trigger a chase response. Stand still, keep your hands at your sides, and remain quiet until the dog loses interest.

Remember, dogs can be wonderful companions, but it’s important to know how to interact with them safely! 🐕❤️
