Too many security officers are handed a uniform, given a quick rundown of the post, and expected to figure the rest out as they go.

One of the biggest problems in the security industry today is companies taking on any contract they can get simply because there’s money attached to it. There’s a difference between a security company and a staffing agency. A security company should provide personnel for an actual security purpose protecting people and property, deterring problems, controlling access, enforcing property rules, monitoring risks, and responding to incidents.

A staffing agency provides people to fill positions. If the assignment has no legitimate security function and you’re simply putting someone in a uniform at a location so you can bill the client, at what point are you no longer providing security and simply providing staffing?
Not every location needs a security officer, and not every contract should be accepted just because it generates revenue.
Security companies should be selling security not just bodies to fill a post. There needs to be a purpose behind the uniform.

Recent Federal workplace violence data shows just how frequently certain professionals are exposed to violence on the job.

Average annual violent victimizations per 1,000 workers:

🔒 Corrections Officers — 149.1
🛡️ Security Officers — 95.0
🚔 Law Enforcement Officers — 82.9
🧠 Mental Health Professionals — 46.1
👷 All Workers — 8.0

Security Officers experienced a workplace-violence victimization rate nearly 12 TIMES higher than the average worker and in this federal dataset, the rate was even higher than law enforcement.

These numbers don’t include every type of critical incident security professionals may encounter, such as overdoses, medical emergencies, fires, serious crashes, su***de attempts, or other life threatening situations.

Security professionals work in hospitals, shelters, retail properties, nightlife, residential communities, events, and countless other environments where they may be the first person there when something goes wrong.

That’s why training, physical fitness, situational awareness, communication skills, and critical-incident preparedness matter.

Security is a profession. Train like it.
