Otitis Externa- AKA ear infections! Both dogs and cats can get ear infections, typical symptoms can include: head shaking, scratching at the ear, foul odor, pain/sensitivity, and redness. Some pets can at times be asymptomatic until your vet gets an otoscopic exam done during their physical exam. Ear infections are usually the result of underlying conditions; such as allergies but some breeds are more predisposed to these issues as well. Diagnosis and medication can be determined by your vet by doing an ear cytology, which is collecting samples of the waxy material from the ear canal and looking at it under the microscope to identify what organisms are present. The most typically found organisms are yeast and cocci bacteria but we do occasionally find these rod shaped bacteria that at time be difficult to treat, as they can become antibiotic resistant if the course of treatment is not followed as directed and not followed up on with your vet. If you are noticing these symptoms or suspect your pet has an ear infection it is best to schedule an appointment to promptly get started on treatment to provide your furry babies with some relief! 🐾🤗
