Been a while since I posted anything on here but figured I’d address some frequently asked questions I get around this time of year. “Do you encounter rattlesnakes?” A: yes but very rarely. As you can see in the photo, we engage in pack walking meaning a human adult male plus typically 8-10 dogs. Snakes, being highly sensitive to vibration use that to determine whether something approaching is prey or predator. That much weight will typically signal predator in which case they’ll go into hiding. “Have you or any dogs been bit?” A: nope, never once in about 15 years of doing this. In the rare instances of encountering a rattler (or any snake), we simply give them plenty of time and space to assess the threat and go into hiding. Not once with or without dogs has a snake ever attacked me when I give them a little time and space. Also, I do scan the trail closely to ensure we don’t accidentally step on any nope ropes but again, extremely rare to even see one given the vibration we give off. Be safe out there fellow hikers 😎
