Not all pets tolerate heat the same way. ☀️🐾
Certain dogs and cats are at a much higher risk for heat-related illness — even during temperatures that may not feel dangerously hot to people.
Higher-risk pets include:
• Flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Persian cats, who have narrower airways and struggle to cool themselves efficiently
• Senior pets, whose bodies may have a harder time regulating temperature
• Puppies and kittens, who can overheat more quickly during activity
• Overweight pets, since excess body fat traps heat and increases strain on the heart and lungs
• Pets with chronic medical conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, or arthritis
• Thick-coated breeds, especially during warm or humid weather
Heat stress can escalate quickly and become life-threatening without warning. Understanding your pet’s individual risk factors is one of the most important parts of summer safety.
