Our Roots:
About 15 years ago, Bell Rock co-founder Catherine Hoffmann first discovered the Power of Green Nutrition at a wellness retreat in California. At the heart of her experience was the use of one simple, yet incredibly nutrient-rich plant — wheat grass. Catherine’s discovery inspired her to spread the news about green nutrition and sparked the brilliant idea to start growing wheat grass at
the family farm in San Marcos, California. Enter Marty Walls, Catherine’s brother-in-law – a natural-born innovator and master builder with a green thumb. Upon hearing Catherine’s idea, Marty got caught up in the wave of inspiration and built the first greenhouse. Soon they began producing certified organic wheat grass for health food stores and juice bars. And not long after that, they learned about the parallel benefits of green nutrition for pets (of which there are many in the family) and this led to another fabulous idea and change of course. With the help of their stellar “Go Green!” team, Marty and Catherine launched the pet industry’s first nationally distributed live wheat grass and catnip products. Over the years wheat grass has continued to spark green innovation at Bell Rock, leading to a unique line of products beyond the certified organic wheat grass they started with. Their little white pots of lush green Pet Grass can still be found across the country, and now the line has grown to include a self-grow wheat grass kit, dog and cat treats all made with wheat grass, an earth-friendly grooming line containing wheat grass, and because our kitty customers lobbied for it, live catnip plants to put next to their Pet Grass pots. Our Bell Rock:
So, we had a novel idea, a love of animals, a little bit of land… now we just needed a name. Millennia ago, a large, bell-shaped rock just happened to land on our property and call it “home.” It turned out the perfect location for the greenhouses was just below this boulder, so we really didn’t have to look very far for inspiration. Some people believe the Rock is an ancient calendar stone, but others think it’s just a pretty big rock. We’ll never know for sure, but we love our bell rock either way. Our Mission:
Simply stated, we’re committed to providing wholesome (and tasty!) green nutrition to companion animals while continuing to spread the message about the many healthful benefits of wheat grass, for pets and their people!
