Bettas are also called labyrinth fish

Due to the limited aquatic habitat of Asian rice paddies, bettas developed a lung-like organ that allows them to obtain oxygen from the air and not just from water passing through their gills

-This means that they can survive outside of water for a small amount of time

-This is also the reason they can survive in bowls that have low flow for oxygen, though it's not recommended for long lifespans

-You will often see your betta fish come to the surface for air and then dive back into the water. This is why it is important to leave room between the surface of the water and the lid of the tank!
