⭐️Answer to Trivia Tuesday

As most of you guessed, what you were seeing in all three of the photos are bot larvae. These larvae do not cause or contribute to the ulcers we were looking for during these gastroscopies but you might be surprised to know that we find them in as few as 10% to as much as 25% of the scopings we do. The range in percentage is due to location, as we have clinics across California, with some areas having more issues with bot flies than others. We most commonly recommend that you deworm your horse with Ivermectin, Moxidectin, or ivermectin with praziquantel to get rid of bot larvae putting an end to the cycle by preventing more flies hatching

If you would like to take advantage of our 50% off Ulcer Scoping program please contact us by August 31st!

Horses with ulcers are generally reported to be less interested in grain than hay and though they may eat, their pain comes on or increases after eating.

Hock health issues affect horses of 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬.

Here are just a few of the issues we see that can cause hock pain and lameness in our horses:

✅ 𝐎𝐂𝐃 (𝐎𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐬) - often seen in young horses that grow quickly
✅ 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 - occurs after an acute injury at any age
✅ 𝐎𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 - progressive deterioration of joint cartilage in any area of the hock joint(s)
✅ 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧 - degenerative arthritis of the smaller hock joints. Often seen in older horses and commonly causes hindlimb lameness.

If you are noticing any 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐭, 𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐫/𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧, 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 in your horse or if you just want a baseline for future comparison, this is a great time to take advantage of this program and 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝟓𝟎% 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐨𝐧 𝟒 𝐗-𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤(𝐬)!

Where would we be without the love and support of our fathers? Thank you to those who fostered and supported our dreams, our love of horses, and who are there for us through it all. We had the best time with everyone at our educational event and dinner on Wednesday night! 🎉
It was great to see so many familiar faces and some new ones too. We enjoyed your questions and the discussion we had about various infectious equine diseases and bio security measures you can take.
We hope you had as much fun as we did and we look forward to hosting another event in the coming months!
